I use the larger filter housings. They are probably still not large enough. The hot and mighty filter housings look really similar to those used on some swimming pools.
I have a three part separation tank before I even have anything getting into the water boy. I will have to say, I am not terribly impressed with the water boy, nor the engineering expertise of the designer. (I am sorry, when someone tells me I need a 5000 watt generator to run a 9 amp pump, red flags start flying.) I think that if the water boy was a little smaller, with the coalescing plates, and then the oliphilic socks, and maybe one or two separation tanks, then going to a large format filter, that it would work better. I did not have that option, so I modify it to meet my needs. I also think that they need to put a jet pump, instead of sump pump for the pump out. That way it could get past some of the back pressure of the filter media.
I have not guaged how much flow my current system handles, though, I am pumping 11 GPM with a solid vacuum recovery unit, so I know it is at least 10 gpm.
Yes, nearly every week...
Great info Scott, so if you had to do it over again you would build your filter yourself?
Did you custom build the 3 part separator?
What mods did you do to the water boy internally?
How efficient is the settlement tank on the steel eagle compared to the drop out tanks?
How do you like the built in cyclone separator on the steel eagle?
what would you change on the vac end of the process?
So you prefer the pump similar to what Robert and Larry uses on the Recycle 16 for pumping out of the H20 Boy? I prefer those pumps myself.
The final stage polishing filters, you like the bigger ones that Tom Durbin uses. Me too, but how big would you want to go?
What sequence of micron polishing do you recommend?
In your experience would you choose bag over cartridge?
Thanks Scott, appreciate your time
Look at this!

Jim since you can read this ....................... we love ya but we dont miss ya! My PM box has never been so empty
We need to beat up John T for encouraging this. (Just kidding John T)
Nigel I like you and respect what you have to offer the board but you have to try and understand from our perspective as well that Jim was always into it with someone and his style of posting left much to be desired.
Sorry Nigel. I don't review every post. I either did not see that one, or, saw it, was going to get back to it, and forgot about it.
If I was going to get another recovery system, and did not have anything on hand, I would build it myself. I think that with the knowledge that I have, I could have built something far more efficient, for far less money than what is offered with the water boy, or any other system. The biggest thing for me would be getting a tank that was large enough to contain the solids that are gathered in a proper garage cleaning. I am in the process of cleaning a garage that we do once a year, that I am currently at a little over 1000 gallons of sludge, from rubber and oils, and am not done yet. We are doing it over multiple nights, because we are not able to completely close down a garage to get it cleaned. So, we gather about 200 gallons of sludge, take it for disposal, and do it all over again the next night. I am licensed by the state to do this, in case anyone is wondering.

It would probably dry to about 50% so, 500 gallons.
Sure ask questions all you want. I will try and answer. I am fully booked until the end of April, but will make an effort to answer the questions, though.
