A good friend of the family is a sales rep in the Bessemer Al. location? Thats the best I can do? What do you need me to help with?

Univar requires hazmat? Not for a couple drums they dont. I've picked it up in a pickup truck also. May want it where your at, but not here

EVERY chemical distributor is supposed to not give you more than 100 gallons of SH unless you have a hazmat placard. Its a DOT law....

That's why most of them will let you pick up one drum at their location, but won't let you get more than that and they have to deliver it.

I have picked up a couple drums a couple times this year and a few times last year. I guess it depends on where you are and how strict they are and what they really know.

I have bought from Harcross a couple times and they had no problem with putting the drums into my truck, I had drums in my truck when we had the Luncheon here in Texas a while back that I brought back with me along with some caustic and oxalic.

I wish that there were fill up shops around here, just not enough demand yet I am sure.

Anything with a haz-mat denotation carried over 1001 lbs requires the vehical to be placarded, with the driver being a CDL driver. So two 55 gals could be ok, but not more.

Rgilliam you are showing your age with your posts wanting to argue.Since 9/11 these chemical companys have really tightened up.Everytime i go in univar it the same routine show me hazmat cdl and placard.I usually pick up 4 drums at a time.No problems if they dont do that where your at its just a matter of time until they get caught an handed a big fine.

Thanks Russ, I did find them but I could not get small quantities. They had a huge selection of chems though.

Wow, your age is really showing. Aparently you couldnt see to read my post. I said 2 drums you can pick up, not 4.

2 drums isnt going to put you into the DOT bulk chemical laws. I think its over 118 gallons. I keep a 55 of soap and a 55 of acid in the truck. ive got to keep a bill of lading,

I simply responded to your post of you saying you have to have a placard, like he was going to have to have a CDL to pick up 1 drum? Didnt want anyone to be misinformed.

But no one wants to argue, ur right, you got to have a placard to pick up from univar

geez,

You are wrong. Sodium hypochlorite is a Class 5 Table 2 hazardous chemical. You can have according to DOT laws, 1001 pounds or under and not have a placard under section 172.504. http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/safety-security/hazmat/complyhmregs.htm#hmc

By weight from the MSDS sheet is 10 lbs per gallon. http://www.hasaindustrial.com/msds/106.pdf

So, you can carry under 100 gallons and be safe not to have a placard. Anything over that is illegal. A 55 gallon drum typically will have 53 gallons so that would give you typically 530 lbs in weight. So carrying one will be ok, but carrying 2 drums, you will be illegal according to DOT laws.....

yea your right, its 1001lbs or 118 gallons, anything under 8 gallons is considered materials of trade..... I didnt think it wieghed that much. I know ours wieght around 400lbs, but its acid and soap. I just went through a DOT audit. I've asked all these questions. regardless, you can pick a drum up from univar HERE without a placard and a box truck. I've bought it from there a LONG time ago, I dont use bleach. its 569lbs according to my old reciept.

Harcros typically sells by the pound on everything I buy except SH. They sell by the gallon and at each terminal they typically pour those up. $1.87 per gallon here. I just have them deliver to me and saves me a trip. 2 drums is about 205.00

If your planning to work with it and get serious about it, I would get at least one drum. In your situation I would find the nearest wastewater treatment facility to your shop. Call them up and they should be able to tell you who delivers their fresh SH. I live in the country as well and we have no problem getting drums delivered, they will also fill holding tanks for us if we set them up. Also if you call Univar and they say they can't serve you, ask them for their distributor list in your state. They have exclusive agreements with suppliers and sometimes cannot serve you due to contract. The biggest problem guys seem to run into is that if you buy SH from a place that doesn't sell it very fast you will get stale SH. The wastewater and bulk suppliers sell tons of SH and should be able to supply you with a date of manufacture stamp. You may also find that a supplier 2 hours away might have a route in your area.
