Thinking about where best to spend advertising money this coming spring.I plan on having a website but will need to get the word out and was just wondering what you all think?

I think you just need to find what works best for you. For some it's candy jars or postcards or door hangers or websites or a combination of things.

My websites work best for me personally.

Compared to these other guys I'm quite new to the marketing of business.... But in my opinion, I think it boils down to Views/or Impressions per Dollar. In other words, how many people are going to see said advertisement per dollar it costs. If you spend $500.00 on a postcard mailing to "X" amount of people how many of those people actually stop to read it decides your views per dollar. Or if you spend that same $500.00 in a different way how many people it reaches will be the deciding factor. If you have the money a vehicle wrap or just big ole signs on the sides of your vehicle will be a very good ratio of views per dollar. Everywhere you go you're driving a rolling billboard with your business on it.

I agree 100% on your vehicle being a great form of advertisement. My next truck I'm going to have wrapped. I'm going to have Keith from KBK Graphics design the wrap for it and then have it printed and installed locally.

It all depends on your market. (Area). And what your business model is. Residential? Commercial? Both?

For me my website is not so much to attract customers but to give my business a degree of credibility. People do find me on line with a direct search and I do get the work direct from the site. Other people have read my mobile hording [car] and followed up by looking at my website and or ringing direct. I advertise 2x weekly in my local news papers. One is a freebie to all households and I think that is my biggest and best bang for my bucks. My newspaper adverts also direct potential customers to my website where of course I can say a lot more about myself than I can in a newspaper advert. My biggest and best and lowest cost advertising is HAPPY CUSTOMERS. Word of mouth is my most productive advertising. Keep you customers happy and you have a friend and avert for life. IMHO there is no definitive one thing that works better than another but often is a combination of approaches. For me the most important thing to keep going is the newspaper adverts. In a small city [111,000 people] like where I live if you don't stay in peoples faces they think you have dried up and gone away. It's like a weekly flag wave that says "Yes I'm still here".

BINGO-

I think the foundation for any marketing campaign in the Home Improvement Industry is a well optimized website. It does give your company credibility and makes you appear as a legitimate company

From there you branch out- Mailers, signs, etc

Vehicle wraps are huge attention getters- I remember driving home after picking up my wrapped trailer and i got a call from someone who i passed!!!

It "legitimizes" your business in the eyes of your customer. Here in the U.S. customer use website searches like the phone book for finding service companies. If they get a business card, mailer, etc. they want to verify the company so they go to to net and search for their website.....at least our customers do.

Personally- i would be extremely hesitant to use any service with a company without a website

I think most customers feel the same way

I feel the same way

Dave- Its amazing how many don't get that

I have a friend of mine who is a plumber handling mostly commercial accounts

Tells me he doesn't really need one since he does only commercial and has a few big accounts he regularly services

Well guess what- he gets a call from a Bank who has a handful of locations (a referral) looking for a Plumbing contractor to service their locations

First question- Do you have a website we can look at???

He's now scrambling for a website!

Get some vinyl on your truck, it doesnt have to be a $2,000 wrap. Get a nice looking uniform and go door to door. Marketing doesn't get any cheaper than that.

Truck graphics are great for branding and horrible for driving leads. I may have gotten 20 jobs directly off of truck wraps.

Website
Knocking doors
Rock flyers (the highest return I've ever seen)

Having a solid program focusing on those 3 will yield the best results.

But as Ron said, you need a whole campaign.
