What can be the ramifications?

Say I took the advice on here, did a stencil on the back stoop of a restaurant without permission. What "Could" be the legal actions taken by the restaurant management?

I mean it would be ludicrous for them to say that their greasy and dirty concrete was violated and now looks worse for wear because a stencil was performed, but you know how crazy things can get. I think I would hold a EPA card in my wallet in case they got froggy with the lawyers?

What do the pros on this angle say about this?

I know there are people that do this without permission, but I'm not one of them. I just got my stencil and would only do it with the customers consent.

Based on some of the posts it appears like some people have had success doing it without permission, but it is risky...good luck

I cannot imagine in my wildest dreams the justification you could give for performing any work without the property owner's knowledge/permission.

"Hey, Mr. Customer, just wanted to show you how terrible your sidewalk looks, so I'm taking it upon myself to not only alter the appearance of your property, but also burdening you with the cost and/or hassle of now having to clean the area surrounding it, whether you wanted to or not, just to get rid of my tagging."

Huh? Sorry, guys, I just don't get it.

"Oh, and Mr. Customer did you say that your PW contractor washed the walks just last week? Well, he must be a hack, and I'm not a hack -- just ask anyone at PWI, they'll tell you! And even though you already have a PW contractor, I'm a professional and I have a Landa and it is my responsibility to show you exactly why you made a poor decision rather than sitting down and explaining to you why I'm better, well, I just prefer to take the easy way out and instead of looking you in the eye and asking for the order, well, I'll show you.
"And, Mr. Customer, I understand that you gave the busines to the guy who had the balls, initiative and sales skills to earn your business in the first place. But I'm not a hack like the cold water guy is, so I trespassed on your property in the dead of night, long after you had gone home for the night, to show you how good I am, how dumb you are for hiring the other guy, and in the process sorry if I embarassed you in front of your manager/owner/employees who had to pass the really cool stencil I just bought. See, all that is cool 'cuz I'm a professional and its my job to show you how wrong you are and I have a Landa and I'm tired of losing work to this guy because he uses cold and, well, forget it...
"Anyway, I'm glad I didn't damage anything while I was there, because my insurance agent might get mad at me and he might be right because I really ought to spend more time doing personal selling and selling quality over price, but sometimes I just go to the PWI board and post videos because I get so damn mad and because this guy is terrible and I'm not a hack and he is a hack and doesn't have a Landa.
"So anyway, hope to earn your business!"

So you have a Landa!! I have done alot of unsolicited stencils and i never got one negative feedback. If it is done at the receiving door or dumpster area no one is going to give you any grief.

We have sold jobs face to face which works good & at night with a stencil, it's just another sales tool. Why are you going off about it :neo:

I have a hydrotek... Another guy has a silver eagle... And another guy has a pressure pro... My stencil isn't really all that cool, but it is a sales tool - all the guys I know that use them have success when it comes to the follow up of the stencil, this is when the customer is sold.

You got issues with someone who has success with stencils?

I have concerns about doing stencils w/out permission in a high visibility area, but around a dumpster or back door area I doubt you will get any bad feedback.

P.S
During your next rant please take the time to fill in your signature. That is a PWI rule.....Have a great day:wink2:

You put a stencil down on someone's walk without permission you should be fined for graffiti or something. I would call you to make it look like it did before you stenciled it. There has to be a more professional way to get work in the concrete cleaning business.

I keep a bucket of dirty, moldy, greasy, oily crap in my truck just incase someone isn't happy with a demo.I'm more than happy to put some filth back in place of what I remove.

Touche:smile-square:

I was on a job site back in my construction days when I came around the corner in time to see a mobile detail guy finishing up waxing half of my hood to show me the before and after. I gave him the option of returning to the condition it was in or doing the whole truck to make it match. Bet he gave up that marketing idea.

From the area I grew up people did that, but they were really bad off money wise, so if you would have said that they probably would have answered with a claw hammer or some lead, but if you were working in that area in the first place "You were a low ball hack" Because they were not paying for quality there. :butcher:

Touching someones car or house is one thing, but steciling a grease spot in a dumpster pad is another. Lighten up on this, because if you stencil 30 properties in a night and you get 1 negative call i would say that it's not an issue.

You could offer to "double their dirt back" if they aren't happy.

I can't imagine someone getting PO'd about a dumpster pad. If they do they have way too much time on their hands.

To each his own. If you choose not to stencil so be it. Why would anyone care if someone else chooses to?

I do find it a little strange that someone so opinionated won't fill out a signature.

Everyone has their own comfort level with any type of marketing. Some guys especially one with the initials RM would feel OK with stenciling the front door of the White House. The weird part is he'd probably get the contract.

Others feel unsolicted bids are too aggressive.

I can cold call commercial all day. I would never feel comfortable door knocking residential.

Do what you feel comfortable with and pass on the rest.

It's great to get opinions. It makes you take a look at your own.

Plus Larry I have the paper clip.

Chris has been doing stencils for weeks now. Mostly right in front of the properties. He follows them up the next day with a phone call or a visit in person if he wakes up in time.

He hasn't had one negative response and I'm not certain but I think he's gotten at least one account from it.

Sounds to me like the wildcat guy's work must be getting stenciled by someone with a hot water unit. If all you have is cold water all you need to do is use the right chems and it will do just as good as the hot unit on everything except for gum.
