Seriously what are Associations , Organization suppose to do?

Ok Jeff

I have told Ron many times he should start a for profit org for contractors. He always ignores it when I mention it on PWI

If he doesnt start one I am going toI am going to call it the JL Pressure Washing Org, hey I want more internet ranking what can I say.

Agreed !!!!

Except its not about goverment licenced. They are passsing some pretty stupid water laws and adopting ridiculous reclaim laws. We are not organized and have nothing to even come close to our representation.

Agree, the last thing we need or want is licensing by the govt or US as an industry.

There's nothing that can be done to save this industry if contractors believe adding more restrictions and government oversight is the answer. Unfortunately too many are brainwashed into believing that capitalism has failed and government intervention is the answer.

Capitalism flourishes only when allowed to grow and prune itself when and where it's needed. Capitalism can't work when it is artificially pruned by the heavy hand of the law (like creating monopolies with endless regulation) or when it's artificially grown with government subsidies (like "cash for clunkers")

I think its obvious if an org had value, people would join or support it and pay for it. At this point I think a completely private for profit org is the only option. What would some of the value be? Our members are top quality - they had to prove it to get in. Does anyone have the motivation and the wherewithall to do it? There's got to be profit in it.

Tom,

You have to get Very Special permission to make a profit. Orgs that make a profit are seen as Dr. EVIL

AC

There's nothing wrong with making a profit AC. It is however, illegal for an attorney to represent two opposing parties. There's a reason for that.

That's the perception that many have of our current orgs and any org that has potential to make much profit.

It's kindof difficult to figure out who is who in situations where an org works towards making one product illegal and gets another product mandated by the government. Or they petition the government to only allow people to work if they've gone through their particular school.

Where is the line drawn?

Construction companies are licensed and regulated in every state - industry FILLED with licensed con artists and unlicensed after all these years and will continue in perpetuity.
Car repair facilities - ditto
Air conditioning companies - ditto
Facets of Landscaping - ditto
Gambling - The big ones own EVERYTHING and pushed everyone else out.
Makers of Dentures - SERIOUSLY? (It's a felony in some states)
Roofers - ditto

The list goes on and on. At one time there were some 100 geniuses in each group that said "Duh, why don't we work towards licensing to get rid of the riff raff."

They did so and succeeded. Only they didn't realize that THEY were the riff raff and the guys organizing them were using them to set up their own monopolies.

"Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it." Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

I beleive all orgs should be avoided until they shrivel up and die away. Education of other contractors should be the bane of every contractor. Target does not share marketing ideas with Walmart, they want them to go out of business so they do not have to compete against them. We do not need orgs that are in bed with vendors or push agendas that are not beneficial to contractors. Think about the org out there now that has a board member that is an owner in a company that sells reclaim and pressure washing equipment. We do not need any orgs.

+ 1000. I couldn't agree more. BTW, where's page 2?

Thats a great Start Doug
These are in no particular order:

1) Establish a code of conduct and ethical standards for ALL members
2) Establish a Mission Statement and do not deviate from it
3) Establish a set of benefits it's members will receive for joining the association or organization and live up to those benefits.
4) Decide on who your target membership audience will be and eliminate any conflicts of interest
5) Educate and Represent your membership with the highest ethical standards
6) Educate and Represent (when asked) your membership in all things pertaining to the industry to which your association or organization is a part of.
7) LISTEN, LISTEN, and LISTEN some more to your membership and HELP THEM
8) Be a positive influence on the industry you represent and work to be at the forefront of industry changes
10) COMMUNICATE frequently and often with your membership what you are working on, what you see happening in the future and solicit membership help, ideas, opinions.

I am not currently a member of any org or association, these are just some of the things I would think any org or association should do.
