S.O.S.C. Sales Method | Sales Training | Coach Carroll

I find customers more receptive and willing to pay higher prices if I drive a nicer vehicle. Just my experience.Of course, I am also the one who someone's wife saw one of my work trucks and thought the city was paying way too much because the truck was too nice, because I had stainless simulators.

Here are my thoughts when I see a contractor driving an expensive truck

1. He probably charges more than his competitors.
2. There's probably a reason he charges more.

Someones wife knew what stainless simulators were? Thats a win in itself right there.

Scott, I lost a large utility company bid driving up in a BMW. The man told me I lost it in the parking lot before he even opened up the bid. Three years later I made it a point to drive up in the 99 pickup. The same guy laughed about it in the parking lot with me and we got the account. He told me it was disrespectful to arrive at a bid in a luxury car. At least he was honest about it.

Things I have learned.

Suits are for meeting with executives and owners.

If you are meeting with facility staff a polo is pushing it, but a work uniform makes them comfortable. A suit is a guaranteed fail.

A uniform will get you past the gatekeeper. They think you are on the job.

The nice car is for dinner meetings.

You can't loose with a decent American car. It seems to make people think you are thrifty. Grand Marquis are good for taking 3 or 4 people to lunch. Same goes for a nice SUV or Pickup like you and Scott have.

I have ridden 4 people in a Focus with Ron wearing a bright orange polo shirt and shorts and watched him take more contracts out of PM offices in three days than most owners sell in a year.

Ron breaks all conventional rules by being Ron and people just like him.

So you are trying to make me believe that Ron does not get the feminine mani/pedi's nonsense, no girly jewelry, no fake/immitation expensive suit and sells a lot of jobs? ? ?

I just don't believe it because we are being told/sold that you have to believe all the stuff from the 70's videos and books as gospel.

I just don't know who to believe anymore Tony. hahahahahahaha j/k

I'll admit, when I still had my old S-10, I started to wonder what was going through the customers when I'd roll in in my 1991 S-10 with a rolled on paint job,Ha,Ha,..Although I don't care much what people think,..these people aren't just people,...they are the ones who put food on my table. I guess my biggest concern was new customers,..and what they must be wondering about my knowledge and equipment was like,...I mean,..I didn't look successful,..
I started to look at jobs when I was on my way home in my work rig,...It's always clean, rust free and looks like it can get the job done, and I'm also in my work uniform,... I still do that quite a bit actually,..out of convenience also. But I finally did buy something nicer than my old truck,...it's not new as I said,..but at least it has a nice clean look,..and I own it.

And I don't do enough in marketing myself to be in commercial sales, not really interested in commercial,..but if I was I'd most likely have to change,..literally,..Ha,Ha,. When I look at residential work,..it's usually in shorts and flip flops ,..not a big deal,..because I do think customers like to see you're just a regular guy,..but that's just my take on it.

When I started out in 1996 I did make it a point to have my company name on truck and clothes, And that was probably an integral part of why my business is in a nice "comfort" zone these days...After this many years I fortunately have a great clientele built up and am also well known in my area,..so I don't worry so much about making an impression these days,..(Old truck was just too far gone,..even for me, Ha,Ha,.)

*Here's the other thing,..Just because I'm not a "car guy",...doesn't mean I don't like what I do have,.... the maintenance on what I do have,.. work and personal trucks is top notch,..Air filters changed every year,..Oil always checked and changed at regular intervals, transmission fluid/filter changed every year, etc...and a pat on the dash every now and then,Ha,Ha,..

Hey, don't knock pedicures until you try it!!

The thought of someone driving a low end vehicle is charging too much is the thinking of a low end client. Mine like to see success.

I don't think she knew what they were. She just knew that the truck had shines wheels, so it appeared expensive.

I guess I am not a "baller". Mine are paid for. So are most of my work trucks, I think we have ten left to pay off, and that should be handled in a few months. We did add another truck yesterday. Good thing we had a new machine on the floor to put on the truck.
