Question for the new guys

I would like to know what prompted DJ'S question. I'm sure there is a point he is trying to make. maybe i missed it?..... but it seems the thread is going sideways ...

You have to read the 13 page (locked) thread on PTState.....

If two guys stand next to a wall and both piss on it.Is the guy that pissed the highest the better man?

Who cares it's just a pissing contest. If Joe blow wants to run his business his way let him.

Russ lives about 5 miles away and Mark lives 5 miles the other way and I don't know if I have ever lost a job to either. If I do find out I have my first reaction will be how I can get better at whatever they beat me with.Sometimes there is really nothing you can do.If I find out they did the job for half of what I bid, then I know I can't compete with guys that have crews that come iin with trailers with 2 or 3 machines hooked up to knock
out the house in 20 minutes.I can't compete so why worry.

I guess the bottom line is what are you selling a Housewash?Fast service?Low price?

This is the reason hamburger joints change their menu, because they see chik-fa-la selling chicken,so Mcdonald's starts selling chicken.

You will never have all the business

here is one for all the guys that cant get along, when I moved to this area I sang this to JC and Mark!

I would pay big $$$ to see you sing to me
if you really knew me you would know not to say that :sarcastic:

Bring the checkbook, I will meet you at Hooters and sing to you in Public for enough $$$$$ then as I finish I will say "this song brought to you by PROKLEEN POWER WASH where your image is our business" :bow-down:

Naw J.C., nobodies having a pissing match here, just good discussion on the subject.

Either you work a system or the system works you. It's cool to see the different ways Contractors utilize their sales strategy.

D.J.'s system will work because he has a Diversified Business, if he doesn't get the "Big Number" he wants, he has his other Businesses to fall back on.... Very Smart If You Ask Me.

Lets look back on this thread in 3 to 5 years and see who's still going, I'll bet most of us will still be here.

I have started pricing over the phone like most and have also used bing google and zillow for pics and specs my only area of improvement is commercial pricing were companies also require prevailing wages for employees I've been in business for 2 year s and like most new business owners it has been tough for me In pricing commercial I've spoken to few people ive met on forums and local contractors I wanna stay in same price range as others so that I don't hurt the industry

I'm starting to see why we get better coin for the work we do.
I would have never guessed so many of you are doing estimates over the phone. Around here the first guy to show up has a good shot at getting the work. To each their own but IMO leads are too expensive to toss a quote over the phone and if I can close it at a 30-50% premium by showing up I'm there.

Granted the bulk of our work is wood (a different animal) but we did alot of housewashing, paver jobs and concrete cleaning as well on a residential level and we visited every one of them. Old fashion I guess ??

Guess I'm the odd man out

No this is the reason you will get the jobs you go after, you do qualify by phone I bet?

Someone selling the quality service you sell has to show up to explain and put the customer at ease they are choosing the right man.

Over the phone people are looking for price and quality.

People who want peace of mind about someone being at there home want to meet you. Plus your wood projects are restoration. Not a simple house wash...

I qualify the customer, find out what they are looking for, give them a figure (example - Mr Customer that would normally run 325 to 375 based on what you are telling me, when would you like it done?) I dont give them an option, if they say they would like to get it done soon I will say how is xxxday?

99 out of 100 then give me an address and I get it done. Most are just wanting to know a price and that you are confident and know what you are doing.

Simple!

I'll hire you to write scripts

I like to go and meet them. I do qualify over the phone to see whether it's worth my time to go out - sometimes I refer them to the $99 house guy if that's who the kind of job they're looking for. But I do like to sell in person. I've even cleaned a small section as a demo to sell the job because the previous guys said it would not come clean. I wouldn't have had that advantage over the phone.

Granted, I don't get 4-5 phone calls for estimates either. All the more reason I have to make every call count. It's also a lot easier for me to upsell other services, such as window cleaning, when I am there to give an estimate in person.

Another big reason I like to do the estimate in person is it's that much more viability. We have a lot of gated communities that are somewhat difficult to get into here. I like having a reason to drive through, gotten a lot of jobs that way.
