Question for the new guys

That's a loaded question

It not really, its simple. The guy who at the end put more net dollars in his pocket.

One thing to think about, what are the crews doing while the other ones finsished. That plays into the number as well.

I know the reasoning behind this question and it has merit. However, there are WAY too many variables to give a concrete answer.

But Ron is correct - whoever nets the most is the winner. That is where the variables come into play.

If all things are equal (and they never are) and the two guys spent the exact same amount of time cleaning - then the answer is simple. But that is not the case and not everything is equal.

Considering all things being equal (soap cost, labor, and methods)

If all things are exactly equal and I mean everything, overhead, total time spent washing, etc. then go with the volume. Like Russ said, much more exposure, I can't tell you how many times we have booked business from just being in a neighorhood or driving from job to job. I love it when people tell me "I see you guys everywhere".

The more people you can interact with, the better the chance of referrals and repeat business.

Company A: 5 houses @ $20 = $100
Company B: 11 houses @ $10 - $110

1 house = 1 hour
Company A: 5 hours @ $20/hour
Company B: 11 hours @ $10/ hour

Clearly if all things were equal, the guy with 5 houses is making more per hour. I think that we can all agree on that.

I think that we can also agree that there are no two companies that have the exact same expenses and costs, some guys pay themselves more than others, some guys have other means of income, multiple income streams, etc.

I have talked with several guys on here about this very subject and we all have different views of how things should work. The important thing is trying to maximize your profitiablity and not kill the market. There are always going to be guys out there that are cheaper, all you can hope for is the quality of their work is in line with their prices. There may also be someone out there that does not need to make as much per hour and can afford to offer their service at a lower price.

Looks to me like everyone that has answered has been in been business 2 or more years. Am I correct on this?

Yep, everyone has been in business more then two years that has answered, that I know of.
As far as I am concerned, it is not all about money. For me, my life is more focused on making the lives of others better. Funny, the money has seemed to come as I worked this way.
Just to give you a clue, in the past year, I have vacationed in Kona, Orange county, Disneyland, (Gotta try the Grand Californian, very nice hotel) New York City for 11 days, Carlsbad Ca, twice, and a few other places. In the middle of all that, I have had a couple of weeks off for church youth trips. Yet, when I work, I have found very few that can keep up, or be as productive as me, which is very frustrating.

I guess what I am saying is, that it is not all about the money. Money is a tool, not an end.

Neither after I run them over with my truck !!

Well Said....however if it were not for Money you would not be going on any of those trips (maybe the church would pay for the youth trips), am I right?

It is not all about money....but it is mostly about money. At least as it relates to a business. If you were not getting paid would you go to someones house and clean it for them? If you would then you might want to setup a not for profit corporation and take advantage of some of the tax benefits.

Not being a smart ass here, but just stating the fact that the reason we all work so we can make money. Enjoying your job is an added benefit. I know that if I won the lottery I would keep busy doing something, but I'm pretty sure it would not be running a pressure washing business.

We all have different standards of living, one man may need to make $200K to live comfortably while another is fine with $40K...... everyone is different.

Less than 2 years pressure washing experience here but I feel this is a rudimentary, condecending question and will lead to nothing but more aggravation. Does my 15 years as a business owner count for anything in your eyes or just the join date and post count? Is this what this forum is coming to?? I really hope not!

You are absolutely correct, except I don't wash houses. That is not a big market here. Except for the church trips, I usually pay my way, and the way a three or four others, and cover expenses on the trip.
What just kills me is that someone will spend hours optimizing his website, going from place to place doing bids, and get a job or two that gross $100 an hour, or so. Problem is, that price does not take into account the hours and money that it took to make that sale.
So, to clarify, who makes more money, the guy that has to go out and work for hours to get one hours work, at $100 an hour, and works 40 hours a week, or the guy that has the regularly scheduled accounts that pay $65 an hour and works 35 hours a week?
