I don't think Gracie took Hughes to be the fighter he is.. and to think Gracie was beat with own style. but regardless I got to see this fight. And what about Coutre he's not worth makin the list?
Gracie was beat with youth and strength, simple as that.
It is common knowledge all Miletich fighters are juiced.
IF you do not believe that, just look at Matt Hughes in various states of physical shape.
I have seen Matt go from being huge, to be the "mere mortal" he really is w/o juice over the years.
Having been a powerlifter in my younger days, I know juiced athletes when I see em.

Of course, Matt is a great fighter, but it is his strength that prevails.

Sean Penn beat him twice with rear naked chokes when he wasn't juiced.

If anyone follows Pride, Wanderlei Silva would kill Matt Hughes.

Tito Ortiz was on endurance drugs, similar to what Lance Armstrong took.

It is really unfortunate that in my old sport of Powerlifting, and martial arts, that sometimes the outcome is decided by who know''s the best Pharmacist!

Myself, I would sure like to see more Pride vs UFC fights ?

i dont know if i would go so far as to say that but i do believe that Silvia would dominate him like that but i do agree that Silvia is a lot more aggressive and would definitely win
Sylvia just fought a short, stocky guy, like me, LOL
Tim was just TOO big for the smaller man, even when he took him to the ground.

Matt Hughes got his azz kicked by St Pierre.
St Pierre almost beat Hughes the first time, but made a stupid mistake, and got caught in an arm bar.
St Pierre was forced to submit.

I knew Hughes wouldn't beat him the second time.
St Pierre is a Canadien fighter, well versed in La Savate, French Kick Boxing.

He caught Hughes with a roundhouse left leg kick to the side of the head, and Matt did what any human would do, he went down, and down fast.

St Pierre landed several inside thigh kicks earlier, and Hughes grimaced in pain!

He even went so far as to grab his "Jewels" to try and buy some temporary relief from the punishment being inflicted on him!

The Torch has been passed, Matt Hughes was great, on the juice!

W/O the juice, he has been revealed as just a great fighter, but a shadow of his former drug enhanced self!

SACRAMENTO — John Lennon's voice floats through the jam-packed Arco Arena.
Imagine all the people, living life in peace …

Fat chance tonight.

The music dies, and two giants storm at each other. Packing muscles a superhero would envy, Jeff "The Snowman" Monson locks forearms with Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia, who looks like a grizzled longshoreman capable of crushing a tuna into sandwiches.

Twenty-five grueling minutes later, Monson leaves the arena with a swollen eye socket, while Sylvia, his legs painted with his opponent's blood, retains the heavyweight crown in the nation's bona fide entertainment phenomenon: the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Satisfied, a fan claps and raves: "I love that this really is a battle, plain and simple."

It shall be noted that the fan is not a) drunk, b) an ex-con or c) a man.

"Boxing is boring. Brawls are not," says Stephanie Cassidy, 24, a sixth-grade teacher from Fairfield whose husband got the $400-a-pop tickets for her birthday.

Which is pretty much all you need to know about how this salute to Rome's Colosseum has evolved from cultural pariah to mainstream hit.

In the mid-'90s, Ultimate Fighting eschewed all rules in a quest to see who could survive the ultimate beating, famously spurring Sen. John McCain to brand it "human cockfighting."

Today, with new owners and some restraint (no eye-gouging, please), UFC is a powerhouse that is starting to branch out from its Las Vegas home base, as with tonight's contest in the California capital.

Signs of success include the fact that UFC's Spike TV reality show, The Ultimate Fighter, often outdraws NBA and baseball games among the coveted 18- to 34-year-old male demographic. Its pay-per-view bouts are estimated to pull in eight figures, and ufc.com has doubled its traffic, to 2 million unique visitors a month, in the past year. What's more, UFC has generated wannabes who post video clips of their backyard clashes on sites such as YouTube.

Far from being a lone oddity, UFC has spawned five other MMA leagues (mixed martial arts, which combines a variety of striking and grappling techniques), one of which, Pro Elite, just signed a deal with Showtime.

"This is the sport for a new generation," says former amateur boxer Dana White, 37, UFC's president and chief architect as he circumnavigates the Octagon, the chain-link area where his fighters mix it up. "Older people don't get it."

White is aiming squarely for the hip multitudes. They can feel a part of the action by downloading exclusive content for a fee from UFC's website or plunk down big dollars to get that bad-boy thrill (and occasionally rub shoulders with celebrities) at sold-out fight nights.

"I don't miss one of these events, ever, and if I can't come, I TiVo it," says Hollywood superagent Ari Emanuel, sitting ringside. "These are some of the best athletes …"

Emanuel's jaw drops midsentence as, mere feet away, local hero James "Sandman" Irvin lands a punch that flattens his opponent.

"This is going to be huge," says Emanuel, a onetime wrestler and template for incendiary agent Ari Gold on HBO's Entourage, which incidentally will set an upcoming episode at a UFC bout. "A lot of people, networks and cable, are circling. You've got fans with a huge economic diversity. You've got an international appeal. Just watch."

Great Post Russ!
The UFC is big medicine.
Boxing is boring IMHO, in comparasion.

The UFC and the P/W industry have much in common, in that they are young, and evolving.

Do you guys follow Pride, I really like it a lot more. Fedor would destroy Silvia.

Well worth it for their first USA pay per view.

Hey apple, I see you used to powerlift, me too I just hung up the belt about a year ago after 15 years of national level lifting.

Well, I CALL it Powerlifting, LOL
Working out with my "little brother" was POWERLIFTING, at least to me.
http://www.jamiesairconditioning.com

He was dieting for a contest here, so he lost some size because he "came down" in weight too fast.

But him and his buddy's train heavy, at least to me.

600 pound squats, 350 plus bench, and I am talking azz to floor squats too, and NO bouncing the bar off your chest either!

I have seen my brother and his training partner stand right in front of each other doing heavy curls, and DEMAND "One More"!

I have seen my brother get the chit slapped out of him for "wimping out" IF his training partner thought it appropriate.

When I trained, we were serious, with chalk, and smelling salts.

They had a saying "IF you haven't puked from a good set of squats, It wasn't a good set of squats", LoL

Because my brother and most of his friends HAVE the size, they no longer have to train like that.

I did TRY Powerlifting, but the dead lifts did me in.

I am 5'8 185 to 195, depending on how much beer I had the week before ?

Bench and Squats are easy for me, short arms and legs.

But DEADLIFTS ?

I called em DREADLIFTS ?

You MUST have all 3 lifts to be great in Powerlifting.

As for Pride, I wanted to see Vanderlei Silva and Matt Hughes.

Silvia is just almost TOO big.

I fought a really big guy once.
He smarted off to me in a Bar, and it was on!

He was just too darn big too hurt as bad as I wanted to hurt him, THAT day.

Actually, we became friends, and are to this day.

We BOTH had too much to drink that day, and he INSULTED the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, LOL

We both laugh about it now, he he.

Pride has some great fighters.

I think few Men in the world will still stand after Mirko Cro Cop kicks their head ?

I was reading on a MMA Blog that the kicks that did Matt Hughes in sounded like baseball bats at ringside!

The inside the thigh leg kicks that St Pierre landed made Matt visibly wince in pain, as would ANY man.

Those freaking hurt.

New year bash in vegas,,, that sounds great. Opps, be at the winter nationals with the kids. Well if they loose they could be out by the 30

I have not been to vegas for a fight since holy field and ?? cant remember. it was one of his last that where actually at ceasars. Larger contender, they stop the fight do to holyfield being sick.

look who wants to make a comeback !!!!!!

his pro record was 46-3-1

and now they are saying that his HIV was a false positive

He is related to John Wayne ?

Looking forward to Liddell vs. Ortiz 2.

December 30th!

I've got my money on Chuck. I like his style, he's my favorite. If I were a fighter I would fight like him. The guy's striking ability is badazz! He knocks people out falling backwards without even leaning into his shots!
Liddell is a natural puncher, and can defend against takedowns.

liddell is the man. but my vote went to gracie. bieng a jiujitsu student and fan of mma you cant call yourself a ufc fan and not thin khe is the KING!
I like Jiu Jitsu too, but it is not as dominant as it once was.
Once one learns to defend against it, the Jiu Jitsu guys get beat up badly by strikers as they try helplessly to keep trying submissions doomed to failure.

MMA is evolving, that is for sure.
St Pierre is my kind of fighter, and in my mind typifies what MMA is becoming.
Really, to be competitive in MMA today, ya gotta know it all.

MMA RULES!
