Hey Tony, yes I was there when I had information to share, not by design but because I didn't have the internet until 2005 and I started my business in 1996. So yes, I did come on the sites to gain information, but I was also able to share with others instead of just take. The industry argument is the one that always comes up, but trying to put a good image on the industry also makes for alot of guys with good intentions knowingly doing it wrong anyhow.

The industry isn't going to be saved by these boards...

I benefit by the guys who start up and fail, A little competition is good,..but after while it would be saturated and then we would all be bottom feeders.

Jeff

Sorry for the partial quote Jeff. I just wanted to address these lines.
The industry argument comes up because no man is an island. What we do affects the industry. I for one would like to see more guys helping raise the standards thru education (like you get on these boards) because first impressions are hard to shake. I also see an obligation for ones who take to give back but if you are new you have to learn before you can help. Do you leave a baby on the floor until they can walk and fend for themselves? Do you blame them when they can't do something or know something you do?
Finally if we build our business model on the failures of others who becomes the bottom feeder?

Its not easy, you shouldn't get in unless your serious about perfecting the Craft and holding standards.

Truthfully this business isn't easy to be a huge success, yeah a guy can get in low over head use junk to work with. Reality is that he will only attract those type of consumers and lower the standards and price over all.
No Ron it isn't easy. REALITY is I bust my ass to grow my business and I refuse to believe with my low overhead and used equipment (not sure what you mean by "junk") that I would attract the type of consumer you are referring to or lower industry standards and pricing. I am sure if I were a little more business savvy it may be easier for me to grow my business. I struggle to pay my bills but I will not lower my standards or industry standards to get a job (be a hack). I am in this for the long haul and failure is not an option for me. Just to let you know. Reality Ron.

I personally like the boards. If it wasn't for them I may just have been a low baller without knowing it. Or at least been leaving money on the table that I had no idea about. Another thing I think low ballers do to put themselves out of business is appearance. If a company came to my home to do a quote "low baller" all dirty in crappy clothes and beat up vehicle not very professional, or "the other company" nicely dressed uniform with professional equipment and truck! I would pick the professional company to work on my biggest investment.

The other side of the coin is, some people don't care about the "low baller" mentality or the fact they are working on your biggest investment. Ie, your home. All they want to do is save money and for that reason there will always be low ballers because none of us want that customer in the first place.

A man with a used shovel can dig ditches and make a living. A man trying to make a living digging ditches with a spoon won't make it.

It doesn't matter if the shovel is new or used as long as the man using it keeps it functional.

Sometimes the frugal are the most successful.

Good job Rance.

I have turned down work because potential customer wanted me to do something stupid to save them money even after attempting to educate them.

Thanks Tony!

And that brings up another thing. A low baller will take every and all jobs because he has too. A professional can turn down jobs because he can afford too, saving headaches down the road I'm sure.

Tony, I didn't build my business model on failures of others,..My business model created the failures of others. But either way, it's a discussion that could go on forever,...you feel one way and I feel another.

I think we agree, junk isn't functional or equipment that doesn't Shine Rance. Believe me ask Tony or Scott nothing I have is Fancy. My equipment is Bullet proof, maybe anti Aircraft fire tuff.

I am firm believer that you have to have good Equipment to be profitable. Not pretty Solid

Chris I can't afford to turn down any jobs. But I'm not going to lower my standards to make money. Does that make me less of a pro than anybody else? A pro is someone who maintains a quality service or product while maintaining the highest level of self integrity. He does what is right for himself and the client. Being a professional has nothing to do with how much money one has. I am living proof of that. I guess you have enough money to where you "can afford to turn down jobs". SMH

Chris and Rance, I always read all of your posts and always enjoy doing so. You're both Pros in every sense of the word.
