Im always amazed how some people are so successful in spite of themselves

How is it that some businesses can be profitable & successful with an owner who goes against most ethical business practices?

There is a company i occasionally deal with whose owner has a personality of cardboard, treats his employees like garbage (most cant stand him) and interacts with clients like he is doing you a favor.

Ive been in his office when clients have called him -You got to hear this guy on the phone- like your bothering him

Yet they've been around a good while (15-20+ years) and continuously land new large projects

I dont get it- am i missing something?

Does he get stuff done ? does he produce results ? Is he the only one that can handle certain jobs?

Aggregate Industries was the main concrete supplier on the big dig in Boston. They got caught watering down the concrete and other stuff. They even had one of their tunnel ceiling pieces come down on a car and kill somebody. After paying millions in fines The state of Mass still uses them today, why? because they are the only ones that can do it. They get results.

If you can clean a million sq. feet of concrete in 24 hours you will most likely get the job no matter what type of ass you are.

I was just in a computer store yesterday and the guy answered all the phone calls like the client was annoying him. He would answer everyone's questions all bland and almost sarcastic like they were dumb and wasting his time. And I was thinking "how do these guys stay in business?"

I don't get it either. But I can tell you the longer you stay in business the easier it is to make money. That is what I have learned in my experience anyway.

Not proud if this but some people over the years have said they don't like me. But they are tired of going thru people an are now hiring me despite not liking me.

After some will say I'm a bit rough but now they don't get anymore calls or complaining.

I don't tolerate bs. I'm short with some, I also tell them what they need an I don't listen anymore as much as I train new guys to listen when customer are talking.

I think you might take this wrong Mike, I think he's confident in his service an time is money. Plus I get stupid people calling me asking question I know will never buy. Second some ask me about other providers an if I've heard anything about them.

We all have our limits.

Sometimes people who shoot straight are considered rude. Others perceive them as confident. Keep in mind if you watch guy like Cuban, trump & other billionaires they don't candy coat there opinions.

Ron is loud, fat, abrasive and annoying. He also gets things done and runs a well organized operation. Large customers will not and should not have to tolerate a failure to show up, for any reason. You also have to remember they may not have started that way. Sometimes people change their attitudes the more successful they become. You also have to remember that if they have large clients, they might not be concerned with exchanging pleasantries, but are more concerned with getting things off their plate to a reliable service provider, so that they can move on.
In my garage I have a parking sign that says that parking is for "just Scott". It reminds me to stay true to myself, and that I am still the just the guy I was years ago.

Scott, I know you and Ron are real true friends and that is priceless, but words do sting. loud, abrasive, annoying, arrogant are all cool but there are some that do sting.

Yeah don't worry, I can loose weight. Can't fix ugly.

See the positive from my perspective. Lol

I'm offended. You have me confused with someone else.

Really, sometimes smooth and polished is not the best way to go. Those that have met me know that I am really a pretty quiet person, and never force my way into a conversation, almost to a fault. At a party, I am the guy that sits in a corner and waits for people to come talk to me. That being said, particularly with my customers, I am the guy that they trust to get anything done, because they know if I say I will get it taken care of, it will happen. They also know that I am not full of bs and bluster. That sort of reputation goes a very long way.

I'm thoroughly in Mike Rego's camp on this.

In a store, myself to clerk: How are you today?

Clerk to me: "Fine"

Transaction completed, myself to clerk: Thank you

Clerk to me: "You're welcome"

I'll tell you what, I will not shop in that store again - unless it happens that it is the Only Place that has what I need!

My wife and I were at a round table eating breakfast in probably 2009 and Ron came by with a box of name tags and set them on our table and said "Could you guys assemble these?" And walked away before I could tell him to go suck an egg. My wife says "who TF is he telling us to do these?"

Then we promptly proceeded to assemble the name tags.

Ron knows how to get stuff done. Like him or not.

People here who know me probably wont believe this but I suffer from being to friendly in business. Both with customers and employees. I think if I could stiffen up a little and gain more of an edge, I'd be far more successful.

And I don't think Ron is under the impression that he'll be entering any fitness contests anytime soon.
