I need MORE HEAT

I have a 1996 Silver Eagle trailer setup: 20 hp Kohler, 5 gpm/4000 psi pump with a propane heater. My problem is that the heat is not consistant. Lately it heats to around 100 degrees just out after the tank. It has gone as high as 150. I would like to get at least 150 to 190 degrees out of it. Is that possible with my setup? What problems should I look for? Thanks, Kemp

Maybe a regulator going bad? How much pressure are you running?

I have tried 5 to 10 psi on the bottle. It did not seem to change the temp much. The gauge is fairly new.

I can't answer that. I have only had it since March. I just expected it to heat at least around 150. I have 100 lb tanks. I should probably get more familiar with the burner and other little parts and look for worn parts. I am looking to find a good place to start looking. I will check out the high limit switch and blow out the lines and see what happens.

It was pressure related somewhat. I removed and cleaned the dirty jet and blew a bunch of soot out of the lines. Put a fresh bottle on. I got to 160 degrees in less than 2 minutes, then the hose from the boiler started to separate. I got it to 190 degrees before I shut it down. Looks like we found the problem and found a weak hose. Time to order a new hose.

I have 2 of these rigs, have you called Silver eagle and told them what you are trying to accomplish?

Al, I remember your trailer at the ATL RT. We have an almost identical setup. I haven't talk to Silver Eagle about how hot the water should get. I will call them Wednesday to see what to expect from my heater. How hot will yours get?

Thanks for everybody's help, Kemp

had to blow mine out as well and he is sending me some different size orfices in increase the gas flow, I haven't check the temp in a while

We're almost done with "after summer" maintenance but I've got one burner that is only putting out about 155 degrees with an open line. With the temp gauge I've got it's hard to get an accurate temp with the tip in.

I'm getting zero smoke and it appears to be burning clean.

Coil was just completely de-sooted and de-scaled.

Couple of questions:

1) will the temp rise some with a tip in?
2) Where do you put a gauge to test the fuel pressure and what range gauge do you need?
3) This is a backup unit that is rarely used. The diesel in it might be a year old. Could that be part of the problem?

Also, all our burners (3 that we use) put out blackish water and they all have for a long time. This is normal right?

Far be it for me to say Tony, but I think you need a new backup unit...Hey wait a minute, You're in luck I just happen to have one at a great deal. get in the "Vic" and come get it!

On top of the fuel pump there is probably an 1/8" plug, take that out and put a permanent gauge in. 0 - 200 psi. I think they do run hotter under pressure.

Tony, the machine could actually be putting out more water without the tip in and the burner may not be able to keep up. I have an 11 gal./min machine that the burner is only rated for 8 gpm. I have the unloader set for the max pressure that I want and if I need more heat, I just undersize the tip. I would try it with the tip in before I worried about trying to "fix" anything. If it still wont heat properly, then ya got a problem somewhere. The coil insulation could also be a problem and letting the heat out before it has a chance to heat your water all the way.

Tom, How are your heat shields working for you? I like that idea to keep the heat off the belts.

They work great, keeps it a lot cooler in the area. Those mufflers just cook everything. Just a piece of sheet metal top and bottom held with the stock heat shield bolts, leave the side open for air flow. My other engine has the stock heat shield turned around to the engine side of the muffler which is even better.
