All the stupid people, where do they all come from???

Today's entry, I had a guy come in for an interview. He had a "past" that we don't usually entertain, but gave him a chance. Part of our interview process is a road test. I tossed him the keys and got in the truck. As he was backing out of the twelve foot wide space, somehow he managed to hit the one foot square pole in the yard.
I told him to pull up and turn off the truck, went into the office, and he was calling to see if I had authority to turn down the potential job offer. Surprise, I do!
I wonder what a new fender on an f350 costs???

surprise surprise surprise ( best Jim Neighbors voice ). Dam he got the fender, that sucks. You have been having a bad couple of months.

It seems the talent pool is pretty thin.

We have an apartment building behind our shop. One of the residents has taken it upon herself to make us miserable by calling anyone and everyone she can think of on us.
This morning we had a smoking burner because it got loaded up with diesel. We were burning it off, and she called the fire department. It is a block over from our yard. They rolled up, looked to see what has happening, shook their heads and just took off.
Last week she called the Police and the EPA. They have all told her to go pound sand.
Nest week, it will be Sheriff Joe, and immigration. I mean, I have brown people working for me, they must be illegal.
Idiots.

Had a guy that interviewed a couple of days ago. In our ad we specifically state no drug use. We random and do a test before they start working for us as part of our contract. One guy was all the way through the interview process, seemed a little chill, but I thought he was laid back. I was wrong. As my wife started to administer the drug test, he said he had a medical marijuana card, for arthritis in his neck and back. He was 22. Sorry.
Another guy got the job, and we let him start before we got his MVR. He had a suspended license on his record. Insurance treats that as if it was a DUI. He had not even got to the first stop with his trainer, before he had to come back. It almost worked.

Another round of adventures in hiring starts tomorrow. That is what you get when you don't sub, and when you have more than a crew of twelve.

It did use to be longer. My wife deals with that, but we are trying to make it more concise for people that don't understand that they won't bedside g their own vehicle and other stupid stuff.

I don't have staff and I don't want staff. I have been there in the past in a former life as an Electrical Contractor. At least in those days I was hiring qualified tradesmen and you kind of knew that they had a few clues otherwise they would never have made the grade as Electricians and passed the stringent qualification test to get their tickets.
I have read the postings on this thread and wonder if the old saying "If you pay peanuts you get monkeys" is coming into play here. I have seen on the PWI mention of as little as $11.00 /hr and up to $20 /hr being hourly rates paid in the industry. You pays your money and you get what you pay for. When I see, also on here, Guys running fleets of 20 + trucks and mention of hundreds of thousands of dollars of turnover I wonder to myself " surely there must be enough fat in the profit margin to pay for staff that is further up the food chain.

And we are comparing New Zealand to the U.S. Yes, I have a fleet of 30 trucks, and 35 employees. I also have about 30 employees that have been with me relatively long term. It is just a few positions that have a lot of turnover. In this type of job, you were going to either find people who work, or people that don't. Those that work, are going to work no matter what. Those that are not going to work will be worthless on nearly every job they take.
If you notice, most of the people I talk about are people that are being interviewed, which by their very nature means you are trying to weed out the knuckleheads so that they don't cause problems.

Scott-
Your posts about your hiring process has helped me alot

Although im not nearly as thorough ive picked up quite a few pointers from your process

I was looking to hire recently and ran a CL Ad which generated a good resposne

I included some of the things you've listed to weed out shoppers and it was effective

Long story short, i went through the process with this one guy- he was saying all the right things had all the things i was looking for

Spoke a few times then I met with him and i had a strange gut feeling about him as we were talking

Finally at the end of our meeting as i was leaving i reached out to shake his hand and it was wet- not moist but dripping wet

He was also wearing a long sleeve shirt and it was like 80 degrees

So im driving back from our meeting and something just isnt sitting right with me-He has all these quals can do alot of different things and is willing to start asap at an entry level pay rate

So i called him about 20 minutes after our meet and i tell him that one of the insurance companies we do work for requires all subs and their employees to be drug tested (this isnt the case, a bluff)

He pauses and says no problem- i leave it that ill call him tomo after i followup with some of his application stuff and we'll go from there

The next day i call him and leave a message to call me. That was a week ago- never heard from him again!
