Help needed from the "Pros"

Superb PWR

New member
I am starting a PW company in the Gwinnett Co. area of GA. I am going to buy my rig within the next couple of months. In researching rigs I came across the Hot and Mighty unit from the T. George Podell Co. (see link below). I would like any and all options on this unit seeing that this is a pretty big initial investment for a new comer to the business.

I’m figuring that if I start with an investment of this size initially, that I will get a few years out of it before I need to upgrade. Let my know if I’m off base with this train of thought.

Thanks,

hello pwr,
Wowee!
that is a whole lot more than I had plans to start out with
(i'm reading all the info on technique, salesmanship, and proper use of the various chems and looking for the best deal i can find on a 3kpsi 4gpm cold washer for doing building exteriors)
I figure an improved pw will be good addition for my existing biz doing rennovation, repair, and painting.

Thanks..just the feed back that I need.

Nick,
Thanks for the response, I will call you in the next day or so to talk about the possibilities of you putting a rig together for me. I’m just trying to get the most bang for the buck.

I would be glad to help out.

Loren,
If you go to the Powerwasher of North America website www.thepwna.org and look up the PWNA Board of Directors there is a guy in there from your neck of the woods named Cujo Cooley. Since you mention Gwinnet County Cujo helped them set some standards on Reclaiming in your area. Cujo also is involved with the Contractors roundtable in your area where many Powerwashing Contractors meet to network. He is a wealth of knowledge and he can give you alot of info about your area that maybe helpful to you.

If you happen to call him tell him that I refered you to him. Cujo and I served for a short period on the PWNA Board of directors together. PWNA aside Cujo is a good guy to know in your area and if you want to get a leg up on your competition or just to talk shop...he's the man.

You also have another guy in GA named Pete Marentey who owns Sunbrite Supply http://sunbrite.stores.yahoo.net/ who can build you a much more pratical rig for alot less money then that rig your looking at on Ebay. I know Pete well and you can mention me to him also. He can build a beautiful rig and on top of that and this is important he can give you all the customer support you may need if you buy a rig from him. He has a guy there named Tracy who is a brain when it comes to Powerwashers and Equipment.

Hey I Noticed on the photos .. it's one of those surface cleaners with the long handles.. I watched a guy cleaning with one of those the other day .I wonder what the purpose for the long hadles is. ? I would buy a trailer first ..Hunt up a nice machine. I like whitco personally . You would also be better to get a model with a 110v burner because it comes with a belt driven generator usually 2000 watts and has an extra plug for stuff like lights or a vac unit... For 17,000 I could build a real nice unit ... Before you go buying figure out just what you want to clean and if most business have water hook-up on sight. If not ( water is heavy) roughly 8 pounds per gallon so if you carry anything over 200 gallons make sure you have a good truck to pull it.
We have a place in Jackson called Green Earth this guy has a nice set up with a tank and a whitco machine on a tandem axle trailer he tried to sell it to me about 6 months ago but I didn't need it.. He may still have it .. I think it's 3500 @ 4 (Hot) Whitco ( 250 gallon Tank) you will need reels and hose.. (Get double braid Hose) I will see if he still has the unit and how much he wants for it..

WOW... Food for thought

WOW, I really appreciate all of the information, which is just what I need in order to make an informed decision on what is needed or not needed.

I plane on purchasing or building the rig within next two to three months. As I said I am gathering all of the info that I can to make sure that I make a well informed decision on what I deem to be a big investment.

Nick, I see that your rig is an open trailer. I was looking into a enclosed trailer, please give the pros and cons of the enclosed vs. open trailers.

Thank you all

open in my opinion is the only way to go. It enables you to get right to work in under a minute, no doors to mess with easy to move around and work on as needed. My rig is indoors every night i am working in town, so i dont have to worry much about weather on my rig.But we do alot of out of town work and get caught up in weather sometimes, but it has no effect on your equipment as long as you do a maintenance service as needed.

I would think the only reason some guy's do the enclosed is to safeguard thier equipment if they dont store it in a garage or lock-up. I am in the process of looking into building a bigger rig, and this one may be up for sale soon. This rig is set up to handle any size jobs you may get, we use it for all our big accounts in and out of town.

Regards
Nick

I will build you a rig for $17 k that all would drool over. I have about $16k in my rig with two machines on it.

That is way overpriced.

In Canton Mississippi there is a guy that has a really nice set up. he used to go to our church. He went out and bought this tandem axle ,gooseneck trailer loaded out with two machines and all.. What is sad about this is I heard he spent about $20,000 for this setup.. I have seen the rig seating in his driveway ....but never actually on the road .. I have a little over $5000 invested in my setup , my trailer , whitco hot water machine, hose , wands, 2 surface cleaners ( one of which I built) 2 wands ( 1 -3foot and 1- 4foot )
Wet / vac with pump out, and my little trailer... oh and 250 feet of double braid hose ( 200 of which is on the machine ) thats it.. I do pretty good with this setup.. I always wanted too get a big setup with all kinds of stuff so I could drive around and have a really fine looking setup but Usually one machine is all I need for what I do...
On hood cleanings I usually have all night to do a job , so I just take my time and clean it the one machine works fine.. On concrete cleanings One machine well because at what little money is charged for an average concrete cleaning if I had to pay a second machine and worker I wouldn't make any profit. When you stop and think about it unless you have tons of work I would start out small... When I started working for Reed Fire protection in 1989 we used to only clean vent hoods .. We used a old upright burner 220v pressure washer with no name on it , a generator and I think we had about 100 foot of hose.. We then moved on to get a Landa Elec 110v machine It was funny looking Everything was contained under the metal hood it looked like a box on wheels.. It wasn't until 1997 that we started using Whitco machines ( I think they were called stingers) Then in 2001 we bought our first gas powered whitco.. When I started B&R I used to clean hoods with a alkota 110v unit and a rigged up honda pressure washer.. One thing I always did before I bought different equipment is called testing the market..I would always go out on sales calls and ask We Clean Vent Hoods but we can also clean your Concrete would you be intrested in that.. Even if I didn't get the account I would listen to what the potential customer had to say.. By doing this I could way out what kind of machinery I needed and if I was going to profit from buying more equipment..

Damn Nick that is a BIG TANK.. What do you pull that trailer with.. ?

It's a 1 ton chevy turbo diesel with Allison tranny (2006) it pulls like a train.I had DOT pull me over about 3 months ago, they weighed me on the portable scales. The trailer with only 100 gal of water came in at 12,100 pounds.I had to raise the total GVW on my regestration to 26,000 GVW to be legally pulling that much weight, they add up the combination of truck and trailer for your GVW.So i am sure that many of you are pulling overweight, find out now and avoid a heffty fine!!

THAT"S REALLY NICE....They made me put a comercial tag on my 1 ton van last year.. But I never drive it anymore.. I like my old beat up f-150 .. I don't know why .. Oh yea I remember it's paid for.. We are fixing to buy another truck this year I can't decide if I want the 4.6 liter v-6 f-150 or the v-8 model .. There is about 2000.00 difference .. The f-150 v-6 is 16,040 and the v-8 is 18,020.. Just cant decide.

Great advise

Once again thank you all for the continued advise. I have learned more than I imagined.

Nick and Henry, thank you for the referral, Traci, Pete and I talked yesterday and it seems that we are on the way of building a rig thats fit for me and what I want to do.

John B, thanks for the heads-up on the GVW. I have a 2001 7.3 litter turbo diesel Ford F350 with a new factory installed tranny that I pull my 28' Rinker w/triple axle trailer fully fueled is 9889lbs and pulls it like nothing is on the back. I hope that my truck will suffice pulling the rig that I want to put together.

:) :)
