Canvas awnings

i went on an estimate today and the job consisted of canvas awnings to be cleaned. one awning was approx. 20 x 20 the problem with this awning as explained by homeowner is: he had his grass redone which it surrounds the awning. he said from a diesel engine running it left a sort of black residue on awning as well as dirt. this awning has white & tan stripes. the residue looks like soot. i guess the diesel engine had something to do with redoing the grass.anyway what would you use to clean awning or would you not even take job?

Great job on that awning Tim, there are many down here that look like that!

When you first started doing awnings like the one you just cleaned, did you know that you would get good results or did you have to do a test first?

How would you sell that to the customer?

~scenario~

I approach the potential customer to say who I am and what I do, highlight that he has grubby awnings which detract from customer experience, give wrong impression, may have to be replaced for $$$$ if not maintained.

Do I say I can restore them to pretty much original condition, or that I 'could' restore them, let me do a test first?

I'm green in this industry, so don't have the experience to look at an awning and confidently say 'I can clean that' or 'that is beyond repair'... I'm still at the stage of looking at every building/pathway/condo/etc and thinking 'that needs cleaned'.

Vague question, I know - would you contact the manufacturer and get their recommendations first, then approach the customer. I just wouldn't want to be caught out when I'm trying to sell, or appear like an amateur (even if it may be true for the time being)

Thank you for your time.

Steven

Do you think the solutions break the waterproofing down or that pressure cleaning removes it. We have done the same ones more than a few times and haven't seen or heard of any problems. I would like to know more about it. I have a buddy that builds and installs them, I'll see what he thinks.

The solution does it.
You don't have to hit the awning with any pressure. Just washing the structure over the awning and getting runoff on the waterproof cloth is enough.
Ask me how I know.

I am chasing a storefront that has about 50 linear feet of red dirty (slightly green) quarter round canvas awning. I will also try to up sell a wall cleaning. I have no idea how much to price an awning cleaning. I prefer a soft wash if that makes any difference. I am thinking about $1 a foot. I would appreciate any comments on pricing the awning.

thanks, Kemp
