WWI Monument

I am cleaning a WWI Monument. Center is Marble surrounded
by concrete. On top is a very old cannon. Problem is on
surface of the marble a blue line has run dowm from the
gun area (maybe gun had some alloy of copper or other
metal the gives the blue patena). I was able to get rid
of the rust runs with oxyllic acid but the blue would not
give up. Any ideas would be appreciated. The Monument is near a heavy traffic area so not sure that the traffic did
not cause the blue.

If you can't get an answer here, try calling to any local monument works. They should be able to give you suggestions. Wish my grandfather still had all his faculties...He owned a monument company in Flagstaff, AZ for the past 50 years or so. At this point, however, he doesn't remember much.

Hope you find an answer. I think it is great what you're doing, cleaning the monument. Thanks!

Acids like Hydrochloric will clean patina off copper rather fast, but it would be a bit harsh for polished marble.

Prosoco has a wide range of products that may work on your problem (www.prosoco.com) or (800) 255-4255. They can tell you who the local rep. is in your area.

I know they have Marble Poultice and a bunch of other chemicals for granite, limestone and marble restorations. You can also check with your local masonry supply stores in your area. The better ones will usually carry a range of products or have access to it.

Best Wishes!

Regards,

it may need

to be polished out. It might have etched the stone.
can you feel it when you rub your fingernail over the blue?
Is it in or on top?
