Will back linking soon be a thing of the past?

Have you ever read the book, "Who moved my cheese"? I fell asleep reading it, but I got the concept a few pages into it, or I hope so. This is just an intuition, but I see that if I were a popular, sophisticated and cutting edge search engine I would be eventually phasing out or cutting back on the emphasis of back linking. Why would I say such a thing? Simple, back linking can and is being manipulated every minute of everyday. Would you want people screwing with your stuff like that? Even if in your biased opinion, you answered yes to this question there are certain social reason why you would be left behind in the dust as a search engine. These guys exist to bring helpful information to regular people every day. They do it because that is and always will be a popular thing to do. Common sense, right? Absolutely! If you are wondering how you think they might do that? I would say how do you know they haven't already? That's just my two cents worth.....

If you look at the graph , doesn't look like it according to PWI meter. You can see when Penguin hit and now the steady rise back. We have done nothing to counter Penguin, my Web people told me we could and get results based on there new criteria or wait it would eventually adjust. Traffic is still a huge factor in SEO, sorta a catch 22 when your with a new site that can't get google to look.

Simple Blogging will get google to your site if you do some basic things.

Most of the directories and other things out there are about building that platform not your own. This is like smoking , once you start using it and the calls come in your hooked. Sure it works but your never getting off there platform. This means you will cost you money, lets face it they are not going to lower the price of this. Cigarettes used to be 22cents a pack.

Do you see PWI increase in the last three months?

I think you're probable right now and will certainly be ever more right as time goes by. Google is so sophisticated and they get to make up the rules like few other intities on earth and their decisions affect to pocketbooks and lives of countless entrepreneurs, writers, etc....I see sites in Houston that look terrible, the quality of their pressure washing is awefull as evident by their images, and they have zero backlinks - and they are on top of page one of google!!!

I don't get it anymore after the most recent algorythm changes but it is clear that the days of just getting backlinks with your keywords and watching your rankings climb are gone.

It is not always about getting links that use your keywords or a lot of links. It is about finding the right places to get those links from. Now on if they can get rid of it, no they can't without a manual review.

Ron, I ran accross one of my webpages from 2005, that doesn't exist anymore. It started ranking again.. lol i will be doing a 301 on that baby asap.

Pat, I believe the search engines will begin to (I am sure they are) scan for website or business names as well as URLs. There may be other identifiers as well. You know algorithms are simply formulas bases on patterns. If you analyze people's behavior patterns you can adapt your algorithm to serve them the results they are likely to be looking for. Some gaps are left if relying on URLs alone for site/business popularity not to be mistaken for traffic but almost the same. This is a solution for eliminating the crappy businesses, who rank high for the wrong reasons. Because someone could simply mention the business name. The bottom line is SEs will find more ways to bring to the searcher what it is they are looking for. Manipulators, beware, SEs will cut out a lot of short cutters. This should be encouraging for the one's who have been around longer as I am sure that is an identifier of information searchers will be looking for. This all just theory I came up with as I am learning more each day.

Penguin hit in the second quarter of this year....Panda was 2011 but there have been ongoing updates to both.

Ain't never going to happen....the only alternatives to a popularity (back links) method are even more easily manipulated.

They exist to make money and they will tinker with the serps in anyway they have to in order to accomplish that. However, they can never get rid of organic entirely. The day that the serps are entirely paid clicks....nobody will use their search engine. When you think about it for a few seconds, things like Adwords PPC violate almost every rule they force on us.

Google is trapped in the castle they built (organic).

Ron, you are absolutely right about traffic. Quality content is the biggest thing. There are several ways to get visitors to your site, but content is what keeps them there (and keeps your bounce rate lower).

I can see search engines, linking and scanning with content. I believe they all ready scan for phone numbers and addresses. Any formatted info would be the first. Then they could link all the common denominators to figure what this phone number, address, business, blog, directory, etc. Is all about. It all speculation of course, but that's what we do.
