White smoke, no heat.

Ok, first there was horrible black smoke, but the water got hot, so I kept running it until a nieghbor actually complained. (Yeah, i keep running into those.) Then the horrible black smoke turned white/grey and the heat went away. The burner is still running, just no heat. This is a very old burner, so I'm sure the coils need cleaned. I've been told that I need to let a prof. take it apart, and pressure wash the coils. If so, should that cure it? How much should this cost? Are there other things I should try first? Thanks, Jeremiah

The Black smoke is from excess fuel that has to be burned off. You will need to open the burner and spray the tips and nozzel down with carb cleaner. Put it back together Then fire it up and burn off the excess fuel could take some time as it soaks into the insulation. basically it was not firing correctly but still pulling fuel.

kory is right with everything he said about the black smoke. the white smoke/no heat means fuel is spraying (you should be able to smell it) but there is no spark.

Yeah, it definitely stinks. So how do I fix the spark? And is that related to the black smoke? (like a fouled plug in a car motor)

The spark is the top portion of the burner. it is on a hinge, and there are two bolts on the far side. loosen the bolts and flip it out. there are two coils/springs. turn the preesure washer on and heater on. take a metal screwdriver WITH A PLASTIC HANDLE and jump the spark.touch both coils with the metal part while holding the plastic side.it should be able to spark.
It is recommended that you consult a mechanic if you have never done this before.
Let me know if anyone disagrees with what I have just posted
