White smoke from the burner exhaust.

Help!

Looks like I'll have to take my pressure washing rig to the shop for repair. We were finishing up a job we were on today and just when I was walking to the rig to turn the burner off to allow for a cool down and rinse all equipment off, thick white smoke was coming out of the burner exhaust. I turned the burner back on for a second or two and the same thing happened. Thick white smoke came out of the burner exhaust.

I do not have a clue what is causing the thick white smoke but it has plenty of diesel fuel and happens immediatly when you flip the burner on and goes away immediatly when you turn the burner off.

Any one have any problem like this. Help!

Could be one of many reasons. If the burner nozzle is partially clogged, the fuel stream will be off center and won't burn completely. If the smoke rolls lazily out the stack and makes a roaring sound, the coil may be clogged with soot and need cleaning Did the machine run out of fuel recently? If so, as the fuel pump picks up air bubbles the pressure fluctuates from an atomized cone to a dribble stream, saturating the insulation.

Russ,

I have 57.2 Hrs on the machine it's practically still new. No the smoke does not roll lazily out of the burner exhaust, it goes straight up.

Is the fix something I should try myself or should I trake it in for repair?

I just got off the phone with Delco and they said it probally just needs the fuel filter replaced. Average lifespan of the diesel fuel filter is 2 months.

I've had the unit since December of last year. I'm the only one who has been fueling the equipment so I think we are OK there. Good point though!

The Delco tech also mentioned that the tank should be topped of after each use. Less air in the tank produces less moisture.

Hopefully replacing the filter will resolve the issue. I'll post my findings when I can get it done. A few days.

Do you have a water seperator or a racor filter for your diesel fuel line?

Grant,

Yes, I'm heading out this afternoon to pick up a new one. Any suggestions who might be the cheapest?

New Racor Diesel fuel filter installed. Runs good no more white smoke.

Thank you all for the help!

Dale,
Install a gauge on the fuel pump. This will allow you to instantly see if you are getting full pressure at the nozzle.
It will also make you aware of the filter condition. A small swing in the needle is normal.
My filters last about a year. We do make it a habit to refill all fuel after each job. We also installed ball valves at the diesel tank and prior to the filter. We close the valves during transportation and for service applications.
