Where Do I Even Begin?

I recently found a box of old photographs and letters in my late grandmother's attic, and it’s sparked an interest in tracing my family history. Some of the letters mention relatives in Eastern Europe I’ve never heard of. I want to start building a family tree, but the amount of information out there is overwhelming. For those who have done this, which platforms or databases do you find most useful for finding historical records and building out a tree?

I started by interviewing my older relatives before looking online. Gathering those initial names and dates makes searching much easier. Once I had a base, I used local library archives, which often have free access to major genealogical databases. It’s a slow process, but very rewarding when you find a match.

Finding old family documents is a great starting point. When I began looking into my own family's migration from Italy, I found that building the tree digitally helped keep everything organized. I spent some time reading MyHeritage reviews to see what different platforms offered for international record matching. I ended up trying a few different sites to cross-reference the information I found. Some platforms are better for European records, while others excel at North American census data. It often takes combining data from several sources, along with DNA matches if you choose to go that route, to really piece the story together.
