What Would You Do If........

okay....Here's the situation..... You get a call from the assistant GM of a large internationally known hotel chain. The hotel he helps to manage is about an hour away....okay.....you show up and he has a problem, that the other power washer couldn't solve (it is kinda tricky).......he (the asst GM) mentions "yeah if you get these bricks cleaned then there's 11 other _oliday In_s, that could probably use your help!".... okay did he just say that??:D
His problem is now my PRIORITY!!
I call some guy in Phoenix (supposedly the best:rolleyes: ) he tells me what to do .......I do it.....
You see...the hotel was worried because the task in question was something they had failed in their company's recent inspection. The inspector shows up the next day and the GM points out a small test area that i had done and he promises inspector " you see....we'll get them all done, just like that (he points an excited finger at the once blackish brick turned red)".

Inspector approves.

While cleaning my small test area for the inspector the day before, the asst GM also mentions how they need to have their garage done "what are you doing around June " he asks in regards to garage cleaning. okay ....did he just say that??:D
So I says .....JUne......June.....hmmmmm....pretty sure i'm cleaning your garages Ken.

anyway, i submit my proposal for the tsak that needs to be done, i priced it....uh....fair? I get e-mailed back that i am about a grand off.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO ??

Well, I think he's testing you to see if he can then make you go lower on the garage also. That's what these folks do, and thats how they make names for themselves in their circles. Stick to your price on the brick stuff, you've already proved that you can accomplish what another contractor failed to do. Emphasize that fact to "Ken", and let him know that you've given him a competitive bid already.

I agree with Big Mike. Dont come down off of your bid. If you have to tell them you will do there sidewalk or somthing also.

If no one else has been able until you came along , give him a price and stick too it .. He will call you .. give him a 30 day proposal to speed up the decision process..I price impossible jobs a little higher because once you get it clean and he passes you wont here from him again till next time he fails inspection...

I would contact them, and remind them that I was able to do what others were unable to do. I would then remind them that they stated how it was a priority. How big of a priority was it really? If I could not close the deal, after a fair amount of conversation, I would remind them that my bids are VOID after 30 days...

$1,000.00 is a pretty substantial amount of difference in bid prices. Maybe he should be asking more questions of the company that was $1,000.00 less than you. Did they give a free demo area?

stick with your price!! he will call!!! good luck!!

Your responses (and a quick call to OBI-RON) have led me to do what i was being led to do all along. here is the e-mail i sent him:Ken,

I'm glad the inspector approved the tester. As far as the price, we are really where we need to be on that. Our industry supports $2.50/ft for the process of staining/sealing, and another $1.00/ft for stripping. I have already applied a discount of $.75/ft or $850.00 as it comes out in the math. But how about this: Let's do a $1000.00 discount on the garages and set them up for June, I'll even discount the cost per sq ft to $.15/ft !!

This place is soooo swanky, they charge their customers $16.00/night to park in their garage:eek:
