What should travelers check before booking flights and planning connections?

I’m planning a trip that involves a long international flight and a connecting airport, and I’m trying to avoid surprises along the way. I usually focus on the ticket price, but I’m realizing that baggage rules, connection times, seat options, airport changes, and fare conditions can matter just as much. What do experienced travelers check before booking to make the journey smoother and avoid unexpected costs?

My biggest lesson came from booking a very short connection after assuming the airports were small and easy to navigate. The flight arrived late, and I had barely enough time to reach the next gate. Now I check minimum connection recommendations, terminal changes, visa requirements, and the airline’s rules for missed connections.
