what about gas stations

I never see anyone talking about washing gas stations on this BB. Every gas station I go to is very dirty and oily. Is it to much work to clean and dispose of the water. I talked to a handy man that did gas staions in the past and he said he charged $1 a square foot is that the going rate. There are many gas staions around my home and I think it would be great money, but not sure if it is worth it.

What does everyone think about gas stations? yea or na?

And were are all the east cost PW I don't see too many on this BB!

Some do clean gas stations however I would think the main reason most shy away is reclaim, you have more work there then other jobs.

Even if those other jobs might have some oil, grease etc. This is what gets me about gas stations, it is legal for the employees of the station to hose down the place and allow the water to run off into the storm drains but total pickup must be done by PWs.

As for the going rate I would not know, I don't go after that market area, but considering all one must do that would be a moderate rate.

I talked to the DNR in Wi about this issue. Here in Wi. if they get caught it could be a nasty fine. The EPA will go after these gas stations if they see it being done. As for a home owner they don't bother with. Also a interesting fact he told me is that the salt that the road crews put on the road is very harmful to the environment. That is why we looked at Pave-Clean. Before anybody goes off on me about this product don't bother to waste your time. I like it.

Charlie,

Cool it, we all have our good and bad about PaveClean and no one is going to tar and feather you because you like and use it.

As I have said before there is a place for it in the business.

Besides it is a sales tool to gain business if done right.

I did gas stations for awhile, but they are notorious for not wanting to pay what it is worth! They will grind you down so far it isn't worth the headache. So I quit trying. If I thought I could actually even get a $1 a sq. ft., I would do it. I can't get that much here. I barely break a couple of pennies a sq. ft.

We do alot of gas stations and we have no problem getting the price that we ask. We do not get $1.00 per sq. but we make a good profit. The only bad thing that most of the work is at night after they close or when they slow down.

David,

What is wrong with night work, almost all mine is at night. Sure there is the safety factor and I won't work some areas that are known gang territory even with my helper.

Kendra said it right on, there is really no way to make a profit with them here in California as there are to many low ballers doing them illegal who are going to get caught soon enough.

Night Work

There is nothing wrong with night work ,but if I can work during the day would be better. I will agree with the safety issue.
I do not have alot of problems with low ballers , but every once and awhile. Most station we do are on a regular bases,so that takes care of most of the problems.Once you can get in a clean aleast once or twice and they see you do a good job, they are least likley to change for a small amount of money.

Gas Station

I do 4 of them every 3 weeks approx 5000 sq ft. Lots of dwell time and have to reclaim water on two of them (other two have no storm drains or runoff and city has no problem with it as of right now) I charge .07 sqft on the reclaim and .04 sqft on the others do all 4 the same night. It takes a lot more chemicals, dwell time and don't even try it without a heat.

I also run the surface cleaner on the tough areas and do the rest by wand.

I do not mind doing them and always try to hit a night when they have the lot swept (less crack dirt). It makes for a pretty long night but good money.

We had many at one time then along came the Lowballers and made it a hobby and not a buisness !!!! Like most everything else around here. I had a guy who worked for me call me today to tell me he is doing 3 miles of sidewalks in a subdivision and he had to go down to .04 a sq ft to get the job? Good Luck with that !!
