Vehicle wraps, creativity, and actual return measurement

Here in town I have a friend who has been a contractor for 40 years and has every bit of success I am striving for. Unfortunately I waited to talk business with him after having been in business a year already with minimal success. Fortunately I have gotten my head on straight and realized he could be a huge help with honing my understanding of business building. I had this friend be brutally honest about where I have and am going wrong with the progress of my business and among many things he mentioned Vehicle Wraps.

So the question becomes, do any of you guys have input on using or not using wraps, the initial outlay and the return it has netted you? Do you feel there are other methods or strategies that work better for you and your business? Where do these wraps fall short and where do the exceed? What things did you consider when designing yours? Anything you wish you had thought of before completion? And answer any questions I may not have asked that you find valuable.

They look great. But I am sitting here and can't think of one single company that has one. I guess it gives off a certain image and all that. But if it does not make a lasting impression - is it worth it?? The longer I am in this business the simpler I get. Equipment, advertising, and focusing on one segment of business and put everything into making that one focus. Huge company here in town has little or no magnets on theier vehicles and we would all be envious of their success .

Also, if it were me I'd look at vehicle wraps last and focus on some of his other advice.

Sweetwater and Michael DeRose: Thanks, that's what I was looking for.

Ron, Doug, Apple, Jeff: Thank you guys as well for the insight. This might tell me people in our industry underestimate what could be done with them and the possibility of brand/name recognition.

I appreciate all input and welcome more!

Or it could mean they just look silly!

Here is a design that was done. This is what my truck looks like and i think its very clean and legable. I did change the tailgate to a shingle roof before and after.

That's the way it should be done....you can tell immediately what it is you do....

That isn't a wrap. That is signage. I only recently put signage on my trucks. I have received precisely one call to offer work from the signs. I got the job as a sub, and the owner of the building shut the job down, because he thought since he could touch the hose, and not get third degree burns when the machine started, that we were using cold water. I didn't make any money on that one. In fact it cost me a bit because of lost wages. Other then that, I just get calls from people looking for a job. Typically, it is 8-10 a day. If anyone is looking for someone, I have a corner on the market.

You don't have to go the full "wrap" route. I also wouldnt go with the "Free Candy" magnet on the 1984 conversion van either. I spent nearly 3-large wrapping my first vehicle. After that I gave the files to a wrapper and told them I have a $1200 budget, Make it Work!

I would keep in mind on day reproducing vehicles and of course you would want them all to look the same. Logos, colors, etc. I initially paid $250 to Keith for the design. I think it was well money spent. Im on a crappy home pc with no pics. My first wrapped vehicle can be found in this link.

Scott look again its a partial wrap. The bottom sides and tailgate are wrapped. It not just lettering. That truck has brought in over 7000 in paid work since a yr an a half ago being put on. My f150 mimics this truck and was just put on in april and has brought in more than 3000 in paid work. Its just another way to separate yoirself from the competition.
