Fire caused an estimated $105,000 damage to the Taste of Asia restaurant at 2605 Fourth Plain Blvd. late Saturday.

Jim Flaherty, spokesman for the Vancouver Fire Department, credited Vancouver Police Cpl. Duane Boynton with calling in the fire, which Flaherty said could have spread to three adjoining businesses. Boynton was on patrol when he saw smoke.

Crews responded at 10:49 p.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from the restaurant's roof. They were concerned the fire could spread to the Subway eatery, Blixt Economiser and Butcher Boys in the same complex, Flaherty said.

Firefighters subdued the fire in the restaurant kitchen but also had to quell stubborn flames in the layers of roofing. They cut through two layers of roofing to find the fire in a 30-by-30-foot area, Flaherty said.

The fire was under control by 12:05 a.m. Sunday.

Thirty-two firefighters, led by Capt. Nick Lazzaretto and Capt. Duane Schuman, fought the fire. Fire District 6 also helped in the effort.

All businesses in the complex were closed. No one was injured. The nearby businesses had no damage, Flaherty said.

Damage to the structure was put at $75,000, with an estimated $30,000 damage to contents.

The cause remains undetermined, but the blaze appeared to start in the cooking area and spread through exhaust ducts, Flaherty said.
