Using a Telemarketing Company

I'm thinking about using a Telemarketing Company.

Basically, purchase a machine that can dial up to 4000 potential customers a day. I can purchase a list of phone numbers that targets a certain type of customer. Example: Homeowner with a certain income with a home of a certain value - or commercial business - or whatever.

I create a message that last about 30 seconds - at the end the potential customer has an option to push a button (phone) to be connected to my business line.

Statistics shows that there is a 0.05 call back rate. 4000 calls would mean at least 20 leads.

Once you purchase the machine, you can enter phone numbers as you wish. You can have the machine make the calls as you wish.

The machine cost $995.00 and a target list from the same company cost $195.00.

I know that the word "Telemarketing" brings a sour taste in peoples minds, but statistics shows that it can work.

What do you guys think?

Has anyone ever tried this?

Please give feedback - Negative or Positive........

Personally I hate those machine calls..........and I'd probably hang up.........

But, statically speaking it has a chance of working.

Dont you think it could also damage your image as well? When you call those customers that hate these types of things.........next time they hear Tidalwave on the radio or see a yard sign they might associate some negativity with it...........

I dont know..........if you try it let us know your results at the end of the year.

What about all those "do not call" lists........do they have those in your state?

Mike

I have the same thoughts. What kind of Public Image does that create? How would it effect the customer's perception?

I really want to try it, but it can be a negative thing. I havn't rule it out.

Surely, there is someone that has tried it. Thanks for the comments.

I would bet your positive response would be closer to .005 or less. Regardless of how I play a message, I still get a click in my mind.

The key is the message and the hook-hard to get in less than two seconds. Regardless, I still get the click. I would save my money. Look at it like this if it worked they would rent the system rather than sell them.

Whats the difference between telemarketing & cold calls?

What if I would have said --- "I'm going to hire a salesman to make cold calls for my business". Would their be a better return?

The word Telemarketing turns people off, but is not the same as you or I doing some cold calls? or any contractor.

I can hire a telemarketing company to do my cold calls with a live saleperson or do it myself? Is there a difference?

Do you guys think a live person cold calling does less to hurt your Public Image than a taped message?

David, I don't neccessary disagree with you - just opening it up for discussion.

I think a live person on the other end of the line makes a difference. I know that when I answer the phone and it is a recording, I hang up without even listening. On the other hand, I don't give live telemarketers much more than that either...They ask for me, or my wife (and often get our name wrong), or the head of the household, or the owner of the business...I say "who is this"...they say "So and so with such and such, inc. calling to blah blah blah. Depending on my mood, I usually hang up on them, tell them I'm on the do not call list and not to call again, or I have a little fun at their expense. I can't recall ever having bought something or signed up for something because of an unsolicited call.

I'd agree that using a recording might put a bad taste in the mouth of the other 99.95% of the folks who get the calls. You might lose as many jobs as you gained, maybe more.

Mike:

The "do not call list" is federal, so all states have it. Not sure how it applies to smaller companies. I know that since I signed up and the list took effect, the calls have all but ceased...Where I used to get 10-20 calls/day, I now get 5-10/week. I love it.

I agree with you Mike.

What results or reactions have you guys received from Cold Calls?

Tim, Who is responsible if you call a DO NOT CALL person? Is it
written down in the literature from the telemarketing co? There
have been some hefty fines. I have also heard that a recorded
message on a DO NOT CALL is a no no (New Jersey) is it in other
areas?

Tim,
We do a lot of commercial prospect telemarketing utilizing live people and no computer generated machinery. We won't do residential telemarketing because of the potential negative impact. Also, if you do go the telemarketing machine route, you can purchase add on programs that can scan your database and cross reference it to the do not call lists. I know people that use the machines with success and it is basically a numbers game.

I think by using the auto call machine it cheapens your appeal. Atleast thats how I have felt when one of these machines had called my house and or business. I was frustrated and annoyed that there was not a actual person on the line! FOR EXAMPLE- Jeepers they cant even call in person anymore, they have it all automated.
My 2 cents. But hey if it works on those little old ladys who dont have anything better to do then have you come wash the driveway for some conversation ,then have at it. lol

I've decided against it for now. I did hire a telemarking firm to do cold calls (actual person) for my Janitorial business. They are going to target commercial and industrial businesses only.

I be sure to let you know how it goes.

I agree with each and everyone of you guys. Thanks.
