Unloader

I'm wanting to get a new unloader and I want to get it from Northern Tool. I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with this brand. I believe the company is "General Pump".

Also is there a specific way to adjust the Unloader and how. And when you adjust it how do you know when it is working right?

If there are better unloaders let me know what they are.

Smittie,
You'll need to get a pressure gauge(4000 psi about $30) to install on the K7 so you can adjust teh pressure properly. The nut and bolt on the top are where you adjust the K7(loosen the hut and turn the bolt to adjust PSI) with the gauge installed and an open gun with a tip in(not a chem tip) adjust the pressure to the desired PSI.
You'll like the slow build up of pressure with the K7 it's a lot easier on the body.

K7 are the way to go. Once you get a flow actuated unloader you'll never go back to a pressure actuated.

Will a K7 allow you to adjust how much pressure you want to put out? Say I am to wash a box truck with stickers on the side. The stickers are already peeling off so I want to use less pressure than 4000psi but rather use something like 2000. Will this allow me to do that.

Also for an regular unloader I noticed there is a big bolt looking item on it. Is there a way for me to adjust it. The problem I'm having now is using a High Pressure tip the pump is having trouble starting. But if I take off the tip to no tip at all and squirt for a second I'll hear the pump. Then if I stick the HP tip back on it will work.

If I adjust that screw should that help the problem? And what does it do. As in if I screw it in all the way how will my pump react and if I unscrew it all the way how does the pump react then.

For somethign like that, I just back up, the further away, the lower the pressure.

For what it is worth, I prefer pressure unloaders. They last longer.

A flow sensing unloader has to bypass 5% all the time. If you upsize the nozzle, you have to adjust the unloader for operating pressure.

For some odd reason. It was working pretty well today.

But I'm probably just going to get a new unloader and go from there. There isn't but one screw so I think I should be able to handle it.

I hate K7 unloaders. They are very sensitive. If everything is not perfect the thing starts cycling. Every time your tip wears you have problems If you put a new tip you have problems. If the flow is not as good as it was when the packings were new the thing cycles.
Plus why do people think that flow unloaders are better? Think about it for a second. What causes more stress on a Metal Pipe or even a Hose (0 psi to 3000 psi) or (3000 psi to 3400 psi) 3000 psi difference in pressure stresses anything more than a 400 psi difference.
Trust me get the Pressure Unloader. 20 years of experience repairing these things should account for something.

With a cold water machine the pressure can be lowered with the throttle.
Why make it complicated?

Sure you can lower pressure at teh throttle, but the cooling system for these air cooled machiens is set up to cool properly at full throttle. If you live in a hot climate, you will want iit cooling as efficiently as possible. My guess is that most would consider Atlanta a hot climate.

Sure the fan helps cool the engine but with those big fins hanging off of the cylinder there is a heat disipation. Plus at half throttle the engine won't put out as much heat as full throttle. The fan will have the same cooling effect on the heat because there will be less heat to dissipate at the lower RPM.
