Trouble at Walgreens

I had something similar happen once. I give a guy $5 on a freeway off ramp. After I gave him teh money, he was on a dead run to McDonalds to get some food. It blew me away, but I was glad that I listened to that little voice that was telling me to give him some cash.

We bought BK for a guy several weeks ago when the temps here were hanging in the mid 20's at night. He asked me for change and I rarely carry cash so I asked if he was hungry. He said he was so I told him to wait and I would bring the food to him.
We dropped off the food and slipped around the block to see if he would eat it or trash it.He was chowing down like a man eating his last meal.
We do get our fair share of people asking for money that clearly have nothing more than a need for a drug fix and I send them packing.
I will spend my last dollar to help someone if they are hungry, but they will die of withdrawls if they think I will give them cash for drugs or alcohol.

Sometimes you can just tell. I was driving to Lowes on a Saturday morning a few years ago and saw a black man pushing a stroller and holding the hand of about a 4 yr old white/hispanic girl. I watched as a white/hispanic woman in her late twenties came up behind him an clocked him and started screaming at him. He tried to run with the little girl and she followed beating the crap out of him. He turned to try to face off with her and she just started hitting him in the face.
I stopped and asked if I could call the cops for him or if I could help get them away from this psycho. He said "No sir, this is my wife, she's just angry because I lost my drivers license and can't get another job now and we have to sleep outside till I can get my birth certificate and get a job. Don't call the cops on her sir, these our our kids and they need their mother".
We got them a hotel for about a month, some food, some more clothes and he got a copy of his birth certificate from Florida or somewhere within two weeks. Meanwhile I gave him some busy work. He got a job within 3 days of getting his birth certificate.
That was over three years ago. He's been by twice since then. One time he had custody of the kids and the psycho was in some kind of counselling.
The next time they all came and looked good.
Sometimes you can just tell if someone is down on their luck or a professional con artist.

Usually the beggers around here are not legitimate. I have had one ask me to buy him some beer before and I gladly bought him a nice Cobra.

A while back my wife and I were in Memphis and stopped to eat on Beale st. to eat. After eating our delicous meal we had leftovers and headed to the car. On the way there a man stepped out and asked us for some food, not money or anything else. My wife cringed after I handed him the big carton of leftover fish and pasta. Sometimes they truly are down on luck and need some help and I have no problems giving it to them however a month or so ago my father-in-law my wife, and I were out and someone gave us the usual story of running out of gas and needing to get to Meridian MS. He went inside and bought him a can and filled it up. The guy refused to take the can of gas saying he just wanted the money

There's a woman that goes from Lowe's to Walmart, to the 99 cent store and back and forth with her (looks like) 8 yr old daughter asking for money for food and giving the same long story about some catastophe that just happened. She's been doing this for about 3 years now. Almost every day.

That is just like this girl that is in her mid 20's, she tells a sob story about her boyfriend that beat her up and she just wants to go back to Austin, Tx and needs some money.

I told her that I would call the police and they would take her back to the apartment and would get her inside to get her stuff so she could leave.

She says that she just wants to go and needs some money for gas.

She has told me the same thing 5 or 6 times and the last time I saw her I had my son and his older sister with me and I recognized her and told the kids that she will come up and tell a story about blah, blah, blah, and sure enough, she told the same story and I told her that she needs to change her story and that she has told it to me many times already.

What a shame.

Shelly just told me that last time they saw that woman at Walmart Fayth (age 6) said "Oh no, NOT YOU again!"

As a long time LEO in a large dept in a previous life we used to get out with the ones that stand on the intersection corner holding up signs. Most of the time they have 200 or 300.00 in cash in their pocket they've made that day. They "work" the corner 2 or 3 days a week then party back at the motel 6 till the moneys gone. LOL they make 2-3 hundred dollars a day don't kid yourself. Had one guy get out of a 40K new Ford dually truck, get a cup and put some pencils in it and started walking a strip mall. The pencils said "I'm deaf and disabled, can you help?" I chewed his arse out and sent him packing. As he walked off I asked him if he understood me when I say If I ever see you again I'm gong to take your arse to jail he turned around and said "yes".

I hate it when the temps get real low because there are a lot of homeless in the smaller town I live in now. One guy makes names in coat hangers. Pretty cool. I got one for $5. He lives out of an old station wagon that looks like Chevy Chase packed it.

Sidewalks wont be clean anymore

Just explain to them what you are doing and tell them you woundnt want them or there belongings to get wet. That works 99 % of the time.

Cool thread! I am not scared of getting screwed by a homeless person. It is good to discourage the scammers when possible, but I wonder what someone would think if I left without my wallet and happen to run out of gas on my way back home to get it.... I have seen people in really sweet rides asking for gas money and wonder if the car was stolen. You have to do what your conscience tells you at the time.

I would politely let them know it will be getting noisy and wet soon and they might want to go somewhere quiet and dry. If it became a regular problem I might let mgmt know that I will be skipping the service or dropping it if the problem isn't resolved. You do have to choose your battles at times, but safety is top priority. Most of these people have mental problems (not dumb, some are very smart) and no matter how tough you are, if you p!ss them off you could get stabbed from behind. You could even give them a dollar for their trouble.
