Trailer Tires

I have 17.5 inch 16 ply regroovable tires. These tire cost me a few $$$. about $240 a tire. Rims are rated just under 5,000 lbs each

Each tire weighs in at 92lbs empty ( No air )
Each rim weighs in at 86lbs.

You know something is up when the tire weighs more than the rim

I can usually buy 15" trailer (rated for my load) tires on the rim for $79 - $99 at Northern Tool. My dual axle tends to eat the rears, so I'm always rotating/replacing and its faster (and about the same price as buying and installing at a local shop) to replace and discard. No waiting at a shop that freaks out when you ask them to work on a trailer. I keep a spare handy, but a can of Slime and a portable air compressor/battery jump start/USB charger come in handy.

Jim that does not help me at all???

How does knowing how much your rims weigh help me any . . . I said my rig weighs no more than 3k pounds so comparing my tires to what you use gives me little to know help?

no offence dj,
even though "you" generated a question, just because it don't answer your issue it might help some one else here. We are here to learn from each others.
Some of the replys here are Completely Off Topic and you said nothing.
I think most of the guys here understand the point You are Trying to make!
personally I think its unnecessarily.

What use is a good answer if you cant hijack the thread.

DJ, I assume you have a single axle trailer. I have run all kinds of tires. I used to buy used tires for my trailers. There is a tire shop across the street from my shop so tires were available any time. Regular car tires will work. I have run new 185/75/14 radials on a single axle trailer with no problem. Used tires are another game all together. They are a real pain in the rear. You never know when one will throw a tread or blow out. I finally bought "Trailer Tires" for some peace of mind. I literally have 8 different trailers from small utility with 13" wheels to 16' tandem axle. For the larger 7000# I recommend the 8 or 10 ply. They will last forever. Dont buy from Northern tools their tire are low quality and for occasional use. Also the Carlisle Tires are junk and self destruct. They put those on a lot of boat trailers. Find a tire store which you can work with. Prices can vary from store to store. Good luck.

Also like John said, have a spare.

bought 4 supermax tires 8 ply for about $225 -3 mo. ago

Dj, I don't pull a PW trailer, but I got fed up with boat trailer tires shedding their treads 300 miles from home so I put car tires on the last two boat trailers (3000 lbs - single axle and 5500 lbs double axle)

They work, but they're squirrely. I don't think I would recommend it for something you use to make a living with. Plus they are too susceptible to curb check damage. Twice now I've busted tires turning the first right turn too tight because I was all excited about going to the lake. I've curb checked the lift three or four times and the tires held up.

Just be glad you don't have to dish out $1900 for a set of 22 inch bucket truck tires or $1800 for a set of 19.5's for a f450. That takes a chunk out of the wallet!!

Or 22.5 inch tires. I had a tire blowout on the way back from Houston and I had to slow down to 40 mph the rest of the way.

I now have an account with a tire company so if that happens again, I will just call them and they will bring out a tire and install it for me.

It is such a relief to have an account for roadside assistance, Hope I never have to use them but if I do, I am set.

I have always put 15 inch trailer tires on my trailers. About 2 or 3 years ago, I started putting 16 unch Commercial TA's on my big trailer. I LOVE THEM!!! I have not had one blow out, shreaded tire or even a low tire since I put them on. I did have an employee do a curb check, and he tacod a rim, but, no tire should have dealt with that sort of hit. (He was texting on his phone, and broke a spring at the same time. I was not happy.) Anyway, I did it on the advice of my tire store, and have had excellent luck with it.
