Tires for my SuperDuty

Mike Hughes

Former Board Administrator
I have a 2000 Ford F250 SuperDuty...........4 wheel drive. I am in need of new tires..........and suggestions as to brand/model?

I really only need two tires........but I am thinking of replacing all four since it's 4WD.

Hmmm, I would replace all four, and rotate them so that they wear more evenly. In my area there is a franchise called Big O tires that I get all of my tires from. That won't help you though because they are mostly a left coast thing.
So failing that, Look at the Michelins. you should have 265/70 R 16's on your truck, unless you already have aftermarket tires. I am running 285's on my Super Duty, and they don't rub, I also have after market wheels.
Anyway, On the website www.ford-diesel.com the tire of choice seems to be the Michelins, with B.F. Goodrich A/T's in second place.

Now it is time for Bigboy to come along and slam Fords, and disagree with me. I am waiting for you Big Boy:D :D

Heck I wish more smarter guys like ya'll would drive fords or dodges, maybe the bowtie wouldn't cost as much but its like what ya'll say {ya get what ya pay for},surely your not going to leave them or those cheap rims on that silerado color.

I run steel Radial Sport Kings A/T,have for hmmm 10 hmm maybe 12 years now, even gotem on my two toys. They do not roar, they handle the snow and ice fairly will and they want dig down in the mud like most, they clean cut fairly will,I likem on the Bowties.sheeeeeeee I haven't had a flat in a long long long time,I rotate twice.,take a look atem, think you'll like the thread.

GOT A NEW SET OF TIRES FOR MY SUPER DUTY A MONTH AGO.

THEY WERE DURANGO RADIAL A/T LT285/75R16 RAISED WHITE LETTERS, ON THE TRUCK AND OUT DOOR $452.55 . MAX LOAD 3305#.

MICHELINS OR GOODYEAR WOULD BE MY FIRST CHOICE .

IF IT WERE'NT FOR SOME OF THE PLACES I POWER WASH AT!

Mike... I have tried many other tire brands in the past and had problems with them either running out of round or hard to balance. After switching to Michelins seems like I quit having problems. They last a longtime and give a smooth ride. they would be my choice.........Dan Swiderski (not Dan S )

Dan save yourself some typing,we can look to our left at your profile and see your not Dan S. and Yes your Dan S also but not the Dan S. I know, your graytruck91 which we know your Dan Swiderski

Hey Dan S. No not the other one but this one, Graytruck Dan,

why not put that cute saying as your signature?

Sure we know you but we all show a bit of our personality and that is yours.

Jon

you guys are correct, I think everyone should have a little of their personality in their signature. I will take care of it as soon as I can .........figure out how to do it.

Mike I like michelin's they are a real good tire.
They are also the most money.
on every tire there is information you need to look at. tempature[a,B,or c] speed[a,b,and c]
and treadwear [from 100 up to 400]
your looking for a B B 300
The higher the treadwear the less aggressive the tread.
radial tires should only be rotated front to back and not left to right.
You say you only really need 2 tires[i will bet you need the 2 fronts] 4 wd is tuff on fronts.
If price is a consideration look at some DUNLOP RADIAL ROVER A/T good buy for the money.
Then stop at K-MART and get some SLIME in the auto department and put it in the tires. This stuff works.[flat reducer] Its green.
ps.
ive been fixing tires for 15 years.
[not much light truck and car stuff but lots of big stuff]

Thanks for the responses so far.........I look forward to more.......

The reason I need two tires.........got a nail stuck in one of them, which of course could be plugged...........but also have a three inch gash in another tire, which is cut all the way to the bottom of the tread..........so, it will need to be replaced. Since I can't really just replace one tire, leaving others with 38,000 miles on them, I am going to replace two.

I will probably get the other pair replaced right before winter.

I just replaced all four tires on my trailer a couple months ago.......I'm sick of spending money on tires! :)

Thanks again!

michelins?

Hey, Mike! I see that everyone leans towards the michelins. I bought a set that now has 35,000 on them and they still look and drive fine - until the road gets wet. Truck still stops fine, but tire tends to spin on take-off. No 4WD here - so power only to one whell on take-off. I think I could get 50K miles or more, but it gets a little more dangerous with every mile. I'll be looking to spend a little less next time and buy a tire that I don't feel bad about tossin' out after 35,000...

Good Luck!

Here is some information most folks don't know. The treadwear rating on tires is determined by the manafacture, it is only for comparison between their own tires not between different companies. I took an early retirement ( after over 24 years) a few years back from a large tire manafacturer. As for the FORD thing, look at the new truck I have posted on www.thecleanernetwork.com BACK IN BLACK

i'm leaning towards the michelins..........

Local tire place $214 per tire plus $14.95 per tire for mounting, etc Total $919 plus sales tax.

Price at Costco (discount warehouse) $700 including mounting, etc.............plus $60 off a set of four next week. Total cost $640.

What a huge difference!!!!!

And for online comparison, www.tirerack.com comes in at $636, but that doesnt include the mounting and balancing which would be $15 to $20 per tire.

MIKE be carefull of the DISCOUNT tires.
They are made just for discount tire resallers.
Check the tread depth and weight of the tire.
Tires are measured in 32ths of an inc.
The best made tires are the ones that were orginal equipment. Gets you hooked on the name brand. I would swear that they use a diffrent rubber compound in org. tires then for the aftermarket. The aftermarket never gets the same mileage.

Yea, I've heard that before (about the OEM). A brilliant business plan if you ask me........

Squirt I often wondered about that, I always asked Firestone why do I get so much more milage out of the OEM then the replacement ones you claimed are the same as OEM.

Always a slightly different answer and with the new truck it came with General tires, some had Michelins but mine had the General.

Will see how many miles I get out of them and how they behave when wet, that is my biggest concern. Truck has 4 way anti-lock, 4 wheel disck and limited slip so it should be better then the Dodge.

Mike keep us up to date on what you end up with.

Jon they play with the rubber compounds all the time. Same tire made last year may have the same name this year but a diffrent compound.
FIRESTONE oh your a gambling man.
It was more FORDS fault then firestone. They recommended the PSI.
I still like DUNLOPS for the money.
They make a real good motorcycle tire also.

Well guys it has been awhile since this post has been active but now that my General tires are a year old and 25,000 miles less it is time for new tires.

Mike did you buy the Michelins? if so from where and how are they holding up milage wish?

I know you mentioned Costco for a good price, and as Ron P. says be careful since they rubber might not be the same depth.

So guys in the last year what milage have you gotten from what brand tires?

What did you replace them with and do you feel they are better, worst or the same?

Cost per tire?

Total cost, balance, stems, warranty etc?

Jon
