Time for healing PW industry wounds???

John for 3 weeks on the other thread Robert has put up a myriad of cut and paste posts, many of which had pictures that depicted anyone with a pressure washer causing something akin to a Chernobyl disaster. How is that not portraying this industry as polluters?
I think you would have to ask Robert that one. If memory serves me correctly he took alot of those graphics from the EPA website and sites along those lines. He's showing what's to be expected and thru his BMP's how we can be somewhat compliant to them in the least way all the way to a more extreme way to keep us out of trouble.

Face it.. In garage cleaning at least it will never be suggested to dump sludge from a combination of many things including oil solvents down a storm drain..

I still don't see where he's painting us polluters when these EPA standards are not set by him...not even close. If he had that power he wouldn't be here posting about it.

So let's start with this one....Where is it that he "Didn't" promote us as polluters? Where is it that he has stood up for us in front of regulators and said we are not polluters? Where in all of his postings has he said anything that would lead you to believe he is an advocate for our Industry? Where in any of his posts has he said anything like "Hey you might have a point, maybe I can help with that"? Where has he said "Hey there's a meeting of regulators lets get together and get some face time" or "Hey lets have a networking event and invite regulators to show them the many ways we are compliant and not a source of pollution"?..................... Saying nothing speaks volumes.
That is Purely speculative. You can't make that argument Guy. Saying that is like putting anyone's name in there to jump to a conclusion.
Also I like to counter you with this... Who said Robert is an advocate?? I think most would agree that he is an Educator. Maybe you'll end up being the "Advocate". Maybe we can clear that one up here. Who said Robert is an advocate? If the finger gets pointed towards me.. I'll say it here. No he is not and that does not make him a bad Person by no means.

John I highly suggest you really learn how to control sludge before you get yourself into a Jam

Where trying to control it. We clean with high pressure and hi GPM's. These garages I get except for a couple we do yearly, are disgusting. We do usually get to dump the sludge onsite which is good. Sometimes though we take the bags of it and transport it in my trailer(this killed my red trailers inside and pay to dump it.

What do you suggest to do with over a 1000lbs & more of sludge.

Common Tony what ya got?? Do you really think Robert was our advocate? Advocate for what?

No Robert has never been our advocate. I am just glad you finally agree.

So far you have gotten Lucky, thank goodness no accidents. Roberts the expert on this stuff, take his enviro course. I'm sure its only 3000, he will likely just tell you to do what you been doing until you get into and accident

I did take the PWNA Enviro class and certification when I was at there Convention. I think it was free and maybe $50 for the certification test... Have no complaints there cause we market it.

Back to the original subject for a moment. I think we can all agree that we love the industry and the business we are in. Otherwise why are any of us in it? I have been a part of the workforce for 16 years working in all kinds of industries. There are two things that are absolute with every business. Weather big, small, corporate, and single. 1) They are in it to make money 2) Their main goal is to take their competitors out.

Now some of you may not like the second one, but that is the cold hard truth. Do you think any of my local competitors would care if I went out of business? I certainly wouldn’t care if they went out of business. Not trying to be an ass, but I am being honest here. Ask yourself this, if your local competitor went out of business, would you care enough to give him a few of your jobs? Would you care enough to give him some personal FREE training so that he could grow his business like you have? And I don’t mean little pointers here and there and setting him on the right track, no… I’m talking about full on telling him ALL the trade secrets? Don’t misunderstand me. We all help each other with general cleaning questions. Even this website has some valuable training tools. But there is no success written book… and there shouldn’t be.

My whole point in all this is that some of you SAY you want to be united as an industry and fight “The Man” yet we can’t even stand next to our neighbor (competitor). In every industry you’re going to have some jack-ass with a pen who is bored out of their mind thinking of some dumb regulation they can poor on the little guy cause if they don’t do something they’re going to get fired by their own boss. It’s all corporate bull. Sorry, but this is a problem I’ve seen for far too long.

So here is the million dollar question. How can we all stand (and I mean ALL) united when we’re so busy running down or trying to beat our local competitors?
And to be honest that goal is not so hard to achieve if people are willing. A prime example is the trucking industry united under teamster. In no way am I suggesting that we form a union. Someone mentioned about unions already. Something to remember about Unions is that they are a business, and all businesses are in it to make money, period. Now about 10-15 years ago unions were pretty good, but now in my own opinion have turned to ****. I was in a union just prior to opening up my business. So I saw with me own eyes the rise and fall of the union. Though I do speak to truckers that are still happy with teamster, so I guess that’s good.

So again I ask how do we unite as one? In some way it’s already been started. Here is an example, PWI, and others united as well, but I would like to see more united. I would like to see our industry as a corporate brand, where we are taken more serious. But we need to do more than just talk about it, we need ACTION!!

I think lobbyist would be a more accurate definition. Most lobbyist's advocate and educate....albeit from the bias of their own interests or that of their clients.

Again....words and deeds tell the story John, not talking points.

When I read his own Bio from PWNA, I don't get the impression that his concern or motivation was for the contractor, deregulation or educating. In fact, it suggests the opposite.

PWNA Bio

In 1992, Robert Hinderliter founded Power Washers of North America (PWNA), a national trade organization for Power Wash Contract Cleaners out of a perceived need to address cosmetic cleaning environmental issues.

In 2010, Robert sold Delux Cleaning Supply to his son, Michael Hinderliter. Robert continues to be active in the industry as a speaker and writer, having addressed several trade associations, and authoring numerous articles on mobile power washing. As one of the first businessmen to work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and having a hand in framing regulations for the Mobile Power Wash Industry, Robert is looking forward to remaining as the PWNA Environmental Chairman and being able to use his expertise to help others in the industry comply with environmental regulations while remaining profitable.

summery:

  • He perceived a need to address pressure washing environmental issues.
  • He worked with the EPA.
  • Had a hand in framing regulations.
  • Now uses his expertise from working with the EPA and framing the regulations to help pressure wash contractors comply.

Where's the contractor in all that? Ironic how the last item involves training and equipment that he benefits financially from....Create a need and then fill it!

In 2010 I watched this play out in my inbox so please don't insult my intelligence with your PWNA indoctrinated replies....by his third email, he was pitching $100 worth of DVD's and asking "Is there anyway I can help you with your equipment needs?"

I'm not suggesting I'm an expert on how to do this but...I have taken on a similar challenge all by myself and am seeing results on a national scale. It starts with a plan and like any good general, you need to analyze the battlefield, assess your strengths and weaknesses as well as that of the opposition.

Robert has actually demonstrated the solution right in this thread.

I'm not going to elaborate more but Kristopher, if you are serious or just curious, shoot me an email (cyclone@cyclonepressurewash.com).

thru his BMP's.

I think that pretty much sum it up. They are not industry BMP's, they are the BMP's Robert wrote, and has been propagating at every corner. I thought it was interesting that the PWNA came up with the exact same BMP's that Robert wrote years ago for Fort Worth. What was more interesting is that even though there was a committee for it, there was never a committee meeting to discuss what should be included in the BMP's. In my opinion, that is pretty telling.

I network with my local competition. One of the biggest jobs we did this yr was thru my local competition. Do I want to see them go out of business...NO.. Where very competitive but one of my goals is not trying to put them out of business. If they went out of business because of me and my company getting to much work then thats there problem just like it is if they get sick or anything like that but my goal if anyone ask is to put XYZ out of business-- I'd say no. I don't think about them.

See these John...????? They"re called question marks, it means someone is asking a question....Not speculating, not argumentative, not a conclusive statement ....a question. Of course you can't/won't answer anyone of them so you call it something else.

You have called him a advocate several times, when I get back from doing estimates I will post all of your quotes saying so if you would like.

And this goes back to a question and conversation we had a while back "So What Has Robert Done For Our Industry"??? After 18,000 views countless posts I'm still confused.....Oh wait I got it now....Nothing.

I think that his posting in the EPA thread has shown that he has No Loyalty to the Contractors that have enriched the lives of him and his family all these years.

You're right he's not an Advocate or a Leader in our Industry, glad that misconception is cleared up......Thanks John.

The problem is the tittle of chairman for the Powerwashers of North American environmental gives water authorities the perception he is.

Why do you think they even listen, they believe he has our best interests at heart. Which we now every understand that's not the case.

Thank John for actually clearing this up

Scott there were many meetings and a lot of changes.

Robert was involved in the development of the BMPs, but he never wrote any. Attorneys wrote the BMPs with input from AHJs and industry.
