I talked to this fellow on the phone several years ago. He told me about what he was doing to address the certification process. A few months after talking to him I thought I would visit the office of the association, since it is listed on the web site.
Posted is a picture of the AKHCA office listed on their web site. The other picture is one of a work truck parked at the curb outside the office.
I have since met him at job inspections/quotations. The last time was a couple months ago. We arrived at the same time, I was not aware before hand that he or any other contractor was going to be there.
I brought my crew leader along because I knew it was going to involve a lot of picking and poking around. The kitchen had been out of service for several years. It had been an oriental kitchen in business for several years and had never been cleaned.
Our normal inspection includes inspecting the plenum, risers, stack and fan assembly. We were in the process of inspecting the top of the canopy (thru a suspended ceiling) for access panels and this fellow had already given the client his estimate for cleaning the system!!
We determined the number of access panels that we would need to install above the hood and then went on the roof to inspect the fan and found more access panels needed installed.
The other fellow didn’t even have a ladder with him and was gone before my crew leader and I went on the roof!
In my area the AHJ does not pull filters, or get on the roof. I have not been with them (AHJ) but have been told that the exhaust system is a very small part of the inspection that they perform in commercial kitchens.
The Health Department does many/most of the inspections in my area. The area manager for the Health Department said there would have to be grease falling out of the canopy into the food before they would cite a restaurant for an infraction!!
This fellow is addressing the intent of the regulations (be certified!) In my area he is meeting the expectations of the AHJ. He also is giving the kitchen operator a cheap price!
A couple years ago I posted on this site a story about another kitchen that I inspected. Here is the link.
