Subcontracting

What are the pros and cons? I am considering subcontracting to bring in a little more money just curious if any of you have done this and how did it work out.

I've subcontracted for years in both businesses and still do. I like it and quality stays high if you pay well enough and followup consistently on quality checks.

We subcontract out all our filter work that requires a person to go inside the building. That guy just does inside work so he's always neat and clean.

You will get used and dumped for someone who does it 5 dollars cheaper down the road.
Also if you like doing 500 dollar jobs for 250 to 275 it's great.

I thought he meant USING subcontractors. I've never replaced a subcontractor over money issues. It's only been quality issues.

On the other hand we serve as subcontractors for an HVAC company that gives us over 50k annually in filter work that gives us work even when we are higher priced. It's a quality issue.

That may not be the same case in the hood cleaning business. I don't have any experience in that.

The contractor will get all the credit for the cleaning. You will use there recieptsn and there labels on the hood so it is like your are working for them.Your name will never get out.Basically you bill them and they bill the client so you will as a company never exist to the client unless you open the can of worms like i did to the client then the contractor will drop you.I havent subed for about 10 years now i would rather get my name out on my own.

Thanks for all the feed back you guys are always so helpful and quick to respond. I believe I am going to give it a try until I get my own buisness built up some more. I will let you know how it works out.

We do not do Hoods, but we do sub them out. It works out well for both, I make my percentage, the sub makes theirs.

I also sub out our pressure cleaning services all the time to Property Managers, General Contractors, Window Cleaners, Interior Cleaners, anyone that will pay what the job is worth.

I say do it.

If you are going to do sub-contracting work for a good company, then I think it's a great thing. I see that you are in Alabama. If you could contact Trey from Sentinel and see about doing some work for him, that would be a good thing. He has a great reputation; known for doing excellent work and his customers love him.

Marko makes a decent point about getting your name out, but getting your name out doesn't put food in your belly. So, I say screw getting your name out and make some money from a GOOD company that is willing to sub work to you.

Thanks again for the advice and I did try to call Trey a few months back but never could get in touch with him.

In the air filter business we are able to get our name out to the customer. There have been times when our HVAC company lost the account, but the customer required that the new contractor use us. One car dealership has kept us through four HVAC contractors and now we bill them directly.
