Spill Contingency Plan, Do you have one???

You also have to remember to get placards (diamond signs) and put on the outside of the trailer or tuck if you are above that reportable quantity as well. As well your driver has to have the correct license and endorsements to haul such materials if needed. Generally, however, the reportable quantitys of such liquids/chemicals are so large that a contractor would never need to carry that much, unless he was planning on doing a months worth of work in a week.

This is actually incorrect. For instance the placardable amount for Sodium Hypochlorite is over 119 gallons. So if your tank you are carrying SH in will hold more than 119 gallons you need a CDL a Haz Mat and Placards. However the reportable quantity for SH is 100 pounds or about 10 gallons. There is NO requirement to have a CDL, HAZ MAT and PLACARDS when you are carryng 10 gallons or every homeowner buying 10 one gallon clorox bleach bottles would need placards.

Hope this helps,

Placards & MSDS are not the only thing most of us dont think about. Many of us run around with these huge trailers without increasing the total GVW of our registration. Most heavy duty pick ups GVW are right under 10,000 lbs. Add a 12,000 lb trailer to your hitch and now you are severly over weight by DOT rules, because you have to add the weight of your truck and trailer in combination as a total GVW. I have a Registration for my truck @ 26,000 GVW in order to be legal to tow at that weight, Same as a Semi it is the combination of the entire load.

Great point! USDOT requires a CDL at 22,000 lbs I believe.
Thanks Nick.

Here, if you have local plates and do not cross state lines USDOT does not apply till you surpass 26k lbs LOAD capacity.

Shelly dealt with this daily for eight years with her business. She dealt with numerous instances of overloading but they all had one thing in common, they were all close or well over 26k.

She never had a single case of any fines for WHAT they were carrying unless they surpassed 26k. That exempts almost all local small business.

"Toxic" spills are almost unheard of.
This is the real America where one can do business without being taxed to death by the cops. (But you might get shot)

Where there is no victim there is no crime.
