TAMPA - A container with an acid residue exploded Friday morning in New Tampa, severely burning a 36-year-old man. Investigators say Kenneth Toledo, a Tampa man who owns a pressure washing business, poured chlorine and water into the container, which had previously been used to apply an acid wash. The container had not been properly rinsed, and the resulting chemical reaction caused the explosion, officials said.
The container exploded as Toledo scaled a ladder to clean the roof of a Hunter's Green home in the 17800 block of Osprey Point Place, pelting Toledo with chemicals and shrapnel. He was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. His condition was unknown Friday.
The explosion also blew a 2-foot-wide hole in the roof. Tile was scattered about the driveway.
I have to add an extra warning here too. One of my crewmen simply added caustic soda to a pump up sprayer that was always used for caustic. The foreman, who usually mixes the chems, not knowing, adds his dose of caustic, then while climbing the ladder, the canister was hot enough to burn his leg through his dickies (some pun intended :yikes:! He dropped the caninster and when it hit the ground he had an explosion that broke a 15lbs chunk out of the concrete curb. The crewman on the ground took some chemical splash, and said he thought he saw a fireball.
Long story short, we had a kit to quickly treat the chem. burn, change of clothes (including underwear) and an extra sprayer. It only set the guys back 18 minutes! And me, just an hour to get, mix, and set the concrete. The owner was very understanding. That was 4 years ago and we still have the account...
It's important that we know some of these things, and while it might appear to hurt us to share with our competitors, we have a very high chance of improving the industry. And that will greatly improve our own bottom lines!
I know I've said this before, but...
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment. We all likely lowballed some time in our career. I know the first hood I cleaned was for $250, and it took me a little over 6 hours. I personally wasn't happy with the results, and I'm not sure I was really worth the price, but it was experience! We have that first invoice in a frame with some embarrassing pictures to remind us how hard we worked to get where we are. A lot of that improvement I owe to many of you guys, and a few more customers that were willing to let me make some bad judgments for a discounted price.
