Rust stain on brick

Hey guys,

I've got a 2-story brick home to pressure wash. There are two 2ft. square rust stains under the overflow pipe from the A/C. The bricks are a medium red splotchy(?) color. I have used a muratic mix on flat surfaces before. The stains are about 15ft up (very noticable). So I am concerned about streaking or discolored areas if I use the muratic. Different chems? Methods?

I always use oxalic acid for rust. If you don't need it for other jobs, HD sells RustAid for about $8/gal. Use a scrub brush and work it in. Repeat until the stains are gone.

I have never noticed any affect on surrounding brick.

By-the-way, make sure you advise the customer that the rust will come right back if they don't deal with the source.

Ditto on John's post. I also keep some metasilicate based material in my truck. Gets rid of some stains that oxalic won't get. Be sure to pre and post rinse the area below the stain to minimize affecting the brick.

It may lighten the brick a bit and the mortar as well but eventually they will get dirty again like the rest of the house and blend back in.

I have always used Eaco Chems One restore. Just spray it on and watch the rust dissappear. Then rinse w water. Never have had to scrub and never had a problem with brick fading or burning. I know it may be a little pricey, but the customer pay's for it, plus I use it for ton's of other stains. Call Mike at Eaco Chem. he'll hook you up.
