red valve

I have a Northstar 3500HPW- pressure washer with a 13 hp motor... When I turn the water hose on, *********water -continuously******* comes out of this red valve,(plastic hole) where water normally squirts out when I lay down the gun for a moment, and the pressure builds.. This has never done this before. And I took the head off the pump to analyze things.. Looking at the water flow pattern, there doesn't look like anything holds the water back besides that little red plastic piece that emits water when the pressure builds.. Is this the hot water release valve ? And why is it emiting water continously, even when the motor is not running. I've had some people tell me something may be cracked , due to winter ? thanks.

If the valve you're looking at is on the inlet side of the manifold (the lower 1/2" ports), it's a thermal relief valve. It may be damaged or stuck open. Either way, it should be replaced.

If.........

you go to this web page,

http://www.biscofl.com/pressure_washers_4030.gif

and look at this pic, look at the pump, and on the right side of the pump, you (can't see it in the pic), but there's an outlet that emits water. It's bent at a 90 degree angle.. and is about an inch long..and it's plastic... but on my pressure washer, it is engraved "inlet" on the pump..? Guess i'll call someone and explain this. Hard to do it with typed words. thx.

hAD THE SAME pROBLEM ON ONE OF OUR COLD WATER UNITS.. When the machine would build up to much pressure or one of my guys would try to run hot tap water thru the machine this little valve would keep relieving the pressure.. It is a safety valve that keeps the pump from getting to hot or exploding ( as I was told By our Mechanic) We called Northern Tool and I think we got a new one for like $ 15.00 and it's all fine.

I was told this thing only pops like 10 or so times and then it usuallly gets jammed open.
If yo lool at northern tool .com you will see all there cold water machines have a safety realese valve and a easy start valve.

Good Luck !!!!!

pressure release valve.

Is this gizmo you're talking about spring loaded and made from steel ? and has a key ring type gizmo hooked to it so you can manually release pressure. If so , this is not the part.. I need to find an exploded view of my pump. This part i'm talking about is made out of red plastic.. and turns right 90°, and looks to have some kind of ribbed , hole where you can attach a plastic 1/2 " hose...( not a pick-up) releases water. I need to get this fixed ASAP............. GO MAKE SOME MONEY ! :D

That part you are refering to may be a rupture disk. These are set to rupture if the designed psi limit is exceded.
Why don't you give Northern a call, they should be able to tell you.

!!!!!!!!!

Best reply i've had yet. Been looking for a blow up view of the pump. But COMET pumps... don't use any common sense when they label their pumps. The I.D. info has worn off....not sure what model it is...!!!

thanks for the info !!!! Bill.

whooops...

The pic isn't my pump..I had a hard time finding a pic on the net that would show that side of the pump on the pressure washer..to explain what I was talking about .. Mine is a Northstar 3500 HPW 13hp. Honda motor..And the only think I can find stamped on the pump, in the metal is.... RF 240 thanks.......Bill
