DC area Clean Across America prospects for 2006
As promised a couple of weeks ago, I am finally able to release some information about the projects we have been planning in the DC area for quite some time now. I'm sorry that I have not released this information sooner but it just wasn't possible until the details were finalized.
Okay so far, I've finalized all the arrangements, methods of cleaning, chemical usage, Environmental requirements, security issues, and so much more red tape than I can list here for two of the projects in Dc. All I have to do now is set a date in the middle of August. Here are two of the projects we have been putting so much effort into.
The Lincoln Memorial
Thomas Jefferson Memorial
Both of these locations need the steps leading up to the memorials cleaned, walls and some additional areas if possible. The plan is to rope off and clean sections at a time to allow visitors access to the buildings. The National park and planning commission will provide a soap called Igepal (A very mild soap) All cleaning will be done using hot water / Steam and less than 600 PSI to prevent any type of damage. They would prefer we remove less dirt than take any chances on causing damage. The surfaces are a variety of Marble, Limestone and aggregate concrete.
The buildings will need to be done over two days to make things easier for everyone involved. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial will be done the first day, and the Lincoln Memorial will be the second day. I've visited both sites quite a few times now and there is a significant amount of gum, surface dirt, mildew and grime on the surfaces to be cleaned. Due to the water access, security, parking, water reclamation and many other things participation has to be limited to 5 or 6 rigs for these two buildings.
I would like to publicly thank the 3 people that have been helping me all along to make these projects possible:
John Ryan
James Merrill
Steve Small
I would like to open the opportunity to other members that are interested. Keep in mind that we can not close the memorials for the cleaning, we will have to rope off sections at a time and work as a team for things to run smoothly.
Water reclamation is a MUST with this project, we are also planning on using this project to educate consumers and the media on proper water reclamation equipment and policies. This is a perfect opportunity to show that water reclamation is not only necessary but much easier than people realize.
There are 4 or 5 openings for rigs, however we can probably have 10-12 participants to ensure safety, water reclaim, debris removal and more, I wish we could have 50 but it's just not possible due to their regulations. I have discussed another memorial with them during this process and if we have enough interested parties I will try to work it out.
Here is a list of materials needed for the memorials I've listed above. If there are any PWNA vendors that are interested in donating them, please contact me to work out the details.
1 1/2 hose 200'
Splitters that can be attached to this hose to feed 7 rigs
I have an arrangement with a local company to create banners for participants and donating vendors 2 * 4' or less and rope.. This company has agreed to make the banners for $5 a square foot. The banners will be used to creatively rope off the areas were working in.
Water reclamation equipment to pickup waste water and discharge it 100' away in the grass.
Water/sand berms to guide waste water.
Water pump and 75' of hose to feed power washers from the Potomac River and the Tidal Basin.
Squeegees to remove excess water from monuments steps
Blowers to remove excess water from stairs.
Hot water or steam machines, maximum water pressure 600 PSI
Tips to change pressure rating down to 600 PSI
Pressure Gauges to verify pressure settings.
Hose, lots and lots of hose... Each rig will need about 300' of hose to reach from the rig to the areas to be cleaned.
All participants for these two projects will meet at one location, fill up water tanks from a hydrant and caravan to the sites on both days.
The other structures and possible projects are listed below. If you are interested in any of them, please contact me.
The DC World War 1 memorial. This memorial was recently placed on the Most Endangered Places list for 2003. This is not an approved and set project yet, it has been discussed but it requires 4-5 days and lifts to properly restore it. We have discussed a variety of methods for cleaning it but could not come to an agreement on the proper chemicals for the job at this time. They prefer Steam Cleaning which may or may not work effectively.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, there are other projects that are being discussed. The Filene center at Wolf trap is one and may happen in April of 2007.
Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts
The Filene Center opened in 1971 and was designed to be in harmony with the idyllic setting of the National Park in which it is situated. On April 4, 1982, a fire completely destroyed the facility, and a temporary structure was quickly constructed in Wolf Trap's sprawling meadow. Both the 1982 and 1983 seasons were held in this 'Meadow Center' while the Filene Center was rebuilt.
The new, and current, structure was built of Douglas Fir and Southern Yellow Pine. A little over half of the seating, nearly 4,000, is under cover with open sides that look out onto the tall trees and rolling hills of the park. The remainder of the seating is uncovered on a sloping lawn where patrons can bring picnics to enjoy before and during the performance.
And...
I am also working through Takoma Park Maryland's volunteer office with the mayor for some projects there.
And...
Rock Creek Park Meridian Hill
And...
Another possible project not approved yet is Antietam Battlefield in Maryland. I have no idea what they would like to power wash there yet. I have contacted them a few times but not gotten a response.
Now, we are awaiting a date for sometime in mid to late August. Once the date has been arranged and finalized we will contact any interested parties to work on these projects. I welcome anyone who is interested in any of these projects to call me if they have additional questions or email/send me the following information.
Color Copy of Drivers License/Passport
Copy of Business Insurance
Truck tag, Make, Model and color
Trailer tag, Make, Model and color
You must send in this information to be involved in the projects in this post.
