PW Price Quotes, What's Your Opinion? - Long


Listed below are the specs and prices of 5 different machines from 3 local distributors.

All the specs listed below are from the distributors, as I understood what they were saying. I have mfg spec docs (and they are vague) but they don’t always agree with what the distributors said. If I forgot to write something down, forgot to ask, or just don’t know you’ll see a ?. I will follow-up with distributors on these things.

I didn’t ask a lot of questions about the Mi-T-M machine after the guy told me the price.

Do these prices look reasonable?

I would really appreciate it if you would let me know if you see something that’s not right, so I can take it up with the distributor.

I would check Delco. We have 5 of their units and have rarely had a problem over the years. Their prices are about 1/2 of what HydroTek or Landa is charging for essentially the same machine. a 5-5.5 gpm, 3000-3500 psi will do just fine. Just my 2 cents

Delco will sell you a wash unit comp. to the ones you have listed with a duel axle trailer, 500 gal
tank,2 hose reels,110ft of supply hose,and 100 ft of pressure line,wand and trigger gun for less then $8000.
You are going to need a tank for the higher GPM pumps some houses cant evan supply the 5 gpm so you would still need a 100 gal.tank.
If you are starting out and have no customers you may want to think about starting out with a nice belt drive, 4 gpm, unit [cold water] from MARK at about $1300 to make sure this is the kind of work you want to do.
Have you got an insurance quote yet?
fuel cans?
spare parts for your unit?
tool box?
advertising exp. account set-up?
you said decks so right there is another $2000 in equipment and supplies[tarps,ladders,sprayers,sealer, chems.]
you also mentioned flat work to do that you should have a surface cleaner[$600]
i am not trying to discouge you just want you to know what your getting into there are cheaper ways of doing everything i mentioned but....

I was wondering if you could fill in the blanks (where you see ?) on that Mi-T-M machine. As I mentioned, I didn't really do any research on it after the guy quoted the price.

Where did you buy yours? How long ago? Would you buy another one?

Paul,

Did you notice the Alkota is about 200#lbs heavier than
the brand X units? That has long been a point I show people
when selling an Alkota skid. Brad can show you the deck plate,
and coil length and style (cold water wrap design) etc.
That explain for the weight difference.

Alkota builds a heavy duty skid!

I’d buy a machine from Delco in a heartbeat if anybody around here would support it. You mention Delco or Rahsco and these guys go ballistic. All of them let you know that servicing Delco equipment (or any equipment that you don’t buy from them) will be at the bottom of their priority list when it needs service or if it breaks down.

As far as tools, believe me, I’m covered. But, if I need a tool or part and don’t have it; I’ll buy it as soon as I need it. I’ve been rehabbing SFH’s for the past several years and I’ve found that buying tools is just part of the job. In my opinion, doing a good job without the right tools never justifies the extra time it takes.

What do you think of the “Price/Quality” of the machines listed above?

Paul, I would look at the TUFF skid units at one of the dealers,Glenn at Ace Cleaning has several different units starting at less than $3,000.00 and up. Tell him what you want and he can have one built to your specifications. All of the units listed above are good machines but at a much higher in price. Let him give you a quote based on the spec. you inquire about. If you have a certain engine, pump and burner the difference in the machines will be fuel tanks added features frame, warranty and the company standing behind it if problems come up. One of the most important things about this business is being albe to repair your own equiptment. Down time cost you more than you realize. A back up machine and or extra parts are the key to completion af any job. A repair kit of couplers, plugs, o-rings, nozzles and shut off valves should be standard equiptment on every rig just as a first aid kit is.
 
I would not buy another Tuff, I think they are junk and are not worth the effort. I have an elite that is almost identical, and is totally problem free. I don't know why, that is just the way it is for me.
As for the local distributor doing all of the repair and maintenance on the machine, I don't think that is wise. I save about $10,000 a year, minimum per machine in maintenance and repairs because I do it myself. Just my parts alone run me about $5000 a year, and I get the parts for about half or less of what a local distributor charges. Then there is the labor to diagnose and install the parts on top of it.:rolleyes: Now you may get lucky, but most distributors are real shy bout warranty on pressure washers because almost all pay for the warranty work. I think that Landa reimburses the distributors for warranty work, but at a significantly reduced rate. This means that are a lot more likely to tell you, "sorry, that isn't covered under warranty." So in my opinion I would buy a machine from Delco or something comparable from someone else and plan on doing the repairs myself. Of course, this is just my opinion and I am sure that there will be someone along shortly that will disagree with me.

I'm just reading between the lines here but it sounds to me like you're either not going to have the time to fix your own equipment, or you're not to mechanical (like me). In that case I'd be looking for the most local distributor I could find who has a good mechanic and see what they can do for you.
 
Scott, Just curious if your elite is totally problem free where are you spending $5,000.00 a year on repairs? I may be wrong but I beleive Tuff bought out Elite hot units a few years back. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.
 
3 Years ago i would not have bought a Tuff. Now They Are owned by c-tech Industries. These are same the folks that make landa. i heard they have made some changes.

I still wouldnt recommend them. jsut thought i'd share that info.

I have heard good things about delco equipment. lots of good machines out there and i thin the brand mark sells is good also.

Seems those prices being quoted are high, also seems you simply took the prices they quoted you.

Go back and play HARD BALL with them, all should be more then willing to offer discounts, and I am not talking a miserly 5% either.

I have a top of the line All American (Alkota) and their prices are equal to Hydro Tek till you start getting tough with them, tell the guy your serious and are not even interested in paying retail prices.

Tell him to work from the bottom up and if he says NO just walk out and say call me if you want my business.

I could have bought an All American on a trailer fully ready to go for less then the Hydro Tek price you posted.

I cannot speak for Delco's private lable products but I can say that most things they sell are over prices.

Bargain as many are willing to deal, they all want one thing from you, $$$$$$. Even shipping cost can be split, remember they make $$ off that too.
 
Okay this stinking computer is doing something funky. This is Scott. There are a few things to remember, I do spend $5000 a year on parts. Some is machine problems, and a lot is operaotr error. That number includes a few things that you might not consider. I replace hoses about every three months. that is four lengths of 100 foot. I always replace the quick connects at the same time. Some items are wear items. Unloaders are a once a year thing. On the tuff it is a four times a year thing. That is unusally high in my opinion. The packing is a once a year thing, on the Tuff a twice a year thing. Ignitors go out about every three months on the tuff and 12 months on the Elite. Some of the parts are lost things. (No, I don't know how the hose reel just fell off the back of the truck:rolleyes: ) Wands get folded, spindled and mutilated. Guns go bad after a while. A new engine is $1300. (you mean it won't run right if a garbage bag is covering the engine?:rolleyes: ) Etc. Etc. Etc. However, it boils down to that I do not have to work on the Elite nearly as much as I work on the Tuff. BTW, Tuff is owned by the harbour group. The sam group that owns Landa, Hotsy and a bunch of other manufacturers. I do not htink that Elite is, however, I am sure that Larry will be along shortly to correct me if I am wrong.

Scott, Thanks for your responce. Why do your hoses need replacing so often? Are your guys that rough on them? As far as the garbag goes maybe you need to put it over employees head instead. Some guys have to be led by the hand, been there. Common sense is hard to teach.
 
Luved the garbage bag on the engine line lol... Yesterday I told one of my kids to move a bag of towels outta the way and he threw it inside the van right up against an exhaust pipe that runs out the bottom. It didn't take long for the inside of my van to catch fire and I almost broke my own neck getting there to put it out. Was lucky because there was 11 gallons of gas sittin right next to where it was burning. Ya gotta watch'em.
 
The garbage thing was an educational experience. IT has been corrected, and I am almost confident that it won't happen again.

As for the hoses, 90% of our pressure washing is fleets. This means that if we need to move the truck to get close to the next vehicle, we do it, and don't wind the hose because it is not cost efficient. Usually this means across Asphalt or rough textured cement. In addtion, we are also constantly working at live yards. That means that there are mechanics, workers, and fuel guys all there and we are working with, around and through them. That also means that we just let them run our hoses over because, again it is not efficient to wind and unwind, or even simply move them out of the way. I tried one day and it added about 20% more time to the job. It just is not worth it. As for the workers, it is nto a common sense thing, it is an employee thing. No one is ever going to care like I do, and I have just resigned myself to that fact.

You know me too well. However you are correct. Elite is a small corporation owned by a very nice gentleman named Tom Martin. Tuff, Landa, Hotsy, Spraymart, etc. are owned by c-tech[harbor group]. Hang in there!! :D :D :D
 
I'm going through 2 120' hoses per year and even changing ends every three months won't eliminate that. Same situation here. All fleets on asphalt and there's always someone running over my hoses (sometimes it kills me to tell a driver to go ahead and run over it)!! I've tried several different brands of hose and the one I'm using now looks like it's gonna last longer (I'll keep you posted).

My guys all accuse me of being to picky but I don't care LOL. They're not the ones who have to go home and fix this stuff and PAY FOR IT!! So I reserve the right to be picky, but I'm better than I used to be lol
