Put out that cigarette!?

A couple years ago I had a crew on a residential, siding wash job for a prominent restaurant owner. The job was quite a distance from the shop, so I made sure everything was set up, extra equipment, materials, etc. were all in place. The wash unit was gassed up the the neck (important here), oil checked and all precautions taken.

About a half hour into the job I received a call from another client and walked curbside to the van while my two helpers were spraying. While conducting my phone business, I aimlessly walked to the unit side of the van and nonchallantly put out my cigarette in what I thought was a puddle of water on the van floor near the unit. My eye caught the action of a fluid coming from the fill neck of the gas tank, which in fact was creating the puddle I was extinguishing my cigarette out in. It turns out the pressure cap on the fill neck was not working properly so the gas tank was regurgatating fuel back up the neck and onto the van floor.

NO.....it did not ignite, and the only "near" explosion was in my drawers!! I shut the machine down, laughed at myself and used the opportunity to instruct my crew on the dangers of having flammable materials near the equipment and supplies. In other words..."Do as I say, Not as I do." Obviously I lived to tell about it.

Safety first.....Safety lasts!
