Pump Oil.. cheap vs. "the good stuff"
If you want to use "minimal cost" .. you get minimal lubricity with $3/qt. non-detergent motor oil.
..spend a little more, and get air-compressor 30wt oil.. $6/qt.
..another step up would be the average bottle marked "pump oil" .. $9 to 13/qt.
I suggest 85w90wt synthetic gear oil.. at Wal-Mart.. it is about $9/qt.
..and it is 3 times the insurance of 30wt motor oil in protecting your pump.
If you do an oil change every 3 months ..
.. at approx. 45 hrs/week runtime.. = every 250 hrs.
that's probably only about 1/2 as often as you should, but..
for argument's sake.. let's say $9 per oil change, at 4 x per year..
that's $36 .. let's say $20/yr. more than cheap = a better chance at NOT having back-end problems with your pump

Jerry, switching from the 30wt non detergent oil to synthetic 85wt gear oil, wouldn't that take more hp to run and be more stressful on engine and pump components splashing through that thick oil? Just wondering.
What would be the differences in the 30wt motor oil vs. 30wt air compressor oil vs. 30wt pump oil?
I am thinking additives and maybe better refining but what else would make these 30wt oils different?
I was told by a Mercedes Benz mechanic that they run 50wt oil in their engines because it controls vibration better, controls heat better and did something else that I don't remember. Not sure if that is true or not as I have never owned a Mercedes Benz but maybe you would be able to explain the differences in the 30wt oils and how going from 30wt motor oil to 30wt pump oil would be better and then the jump to 85wt gear oil.
