You'd be better off with 90 w gear oil in the gearboxes. It sticks to everything better.
 
Russ J told me to use the 90 weight gear lube in the gear box, heard of many others using the same 90 weight gear lube also, never heard of using 30wt oil in a gearbox, I would think that is way too thin for that kind of environment.
 
I think if you removed the gear box seal, the gear lube would leak out and make a huge mess, plus you would end up getting dirt and water in there (if it rained on the equipment), thus the reason for a seal there. Never heard of someone removing a seal for no reason unless they were replacing it.
 
I think you're right, I have the spec sheet I'll look it up for the gearbox. I am probably wrong about the seal too. I remember removing the four bolts to connect one half of the gearbox to the pump. The seal should still be there. If it is 90 then I used 90 synthetic.
 
Ok, I am confused now, are you using 30wt like you said or 90 wt like you said?

Is the seal there like you said or is it missing like you said?

I am so confused. hahahahaha
 
We have used 10-40 in all out pumps for years without any problems ever!
 
Any oil will work (not recomended) as long as there is lubrication in the oil reservoir. I always try to use nd 30 but have used multi weight at times. I had a friend that used duralube in all his pumps and gear boxes with no problem he would change his pump oil every couple years.
 
Chris, take yours apart and let me know if it has a seal in there, I don't remember. I looked at my oil and it appears to be the same as in the pump, which supports my initial statement. 30W ND in the pump and gearbox. Neither smells like gear lube. The oil in the gearbox looks a bit dirtier than the oil in the pump, probably from metal gear particles. My invoice has the YGR part number on it, but the gearbox is labeled as PA Italy.

Does anyone know where to find the specs on this PA Italian Gearbox? Found it http://www.pa-etl.it/en/generale/famiglia/id/474.html

Calls for Sae 90. I should probably go change that now.

Go and order and pay for a new gearbox from Russ at Southside and have it shipped here and I will open it up and tell you all about it. hahahahaha

Silly rabbit, I was joking! Chris, thanks for helping me discover that. Russ and everyone else too.

I like using synthetic oil since it has always done well in my vehicles. I have used it since the mid 90's when mobil 1 came out. I am bad about changing oil at the proper intervals and I really believe synthetic has helped. Someone I know recommended NOT using it in the pumps though.
