pressure guages

when using a pressure guage. should the pressure reading remain the same, with the gun open as it is while not spraying at all?

Unless it is a calibrated gauge that is recertifed every year and cost you many $100's then do not put too much emphasis on what the gauge reads. A $30 gauge is accurate to + or - 10% minimum.

What the gauge reads when operating versus not depends on the unloader and the integrity of the system (leaks). The pressure should stay fairly constant when operating, fololowed by a spike when the gun is closed and then a fairly constant pressure with the gun left closed and a pressure trapping unloader. If you use a soft unloadr then there should be little pressure trapped andf therefore a lower reading.

A gauge can be a guide to the state of your tip and unloader. Notably lower pressure indicates a worn unloader or tip often, high pressure usually indicates a plugged tip.

Check with your local professional pressure washer dealer for details and assistance.

Hope this helps? Cheers.

the only reason I bought was to kind of have some idea of the shape of those parts, by comparing the readings to readings taken soon after a service the machine when I know it is working properly, I should be able to head off unforeseen problems. maybe

Bryan, to check the overall integrity of your equipment, you may want to recalibrate your unloader. Using a good guage, turn the pressure down on the unloader (say to 2000 psi on a 3500 psi machine). Then using a good nozzle tip (for example for my 4000 psi, 5 gpm machine a 5.0 tip) specified for your machine begin turning the pressure up incrementally. Check the pressure running, then with the trigger in the closed position. Depending on the unloader, the pressure will spike roughly 100 psi when closed. If you reach a point where the pressure spikes more, say 300 - 400 psi, then back off a bit. You should be close to the max of your machine.

I then usually put another good tip in place and recheck.

If your pressure reading is much different than the design press of the system, then you may want to try another guage - or you may have an equipment problem.
