You are correct. Actually had that happen once.Hey Ralph,...The unloader block/unloader can be mounted pretty much anywhere between the outlet of the pump and the discharge hose. It doesn't need to be mounted on the base,...remember what it's doing is allowing you to release the trigger and send the water flow into the bypass,..doesn't really matter where that happens,..as long as it's in between the pump and discharge hose.
Mounting the unloader on the pump will be a problem waiting to happen,..although it can be done,...at some point something is going to give and start leaking,..usually the nipple that connects the unloader to the pump. If you do go that route,..a hydraulic fitting connecting them is best used,..and can be changed on a regular basis without much effort.
