Is anyone using Caustic Soda and Caustic Potash together? I have been told that it works great-any ideas? Picked up a bag with my Caustic order-just don't want any problems.
 
I thought that they were the same thing. Just a different name like HCl and Muriatic acid. So you are basically making it double hot. I could be wrong though.

I'm not sure, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that some municipalities require separate disposal of KOH waste water. Can't let it go down the drain. Not a prob with NaOH. But I could be wrong.

I once tried potassium hydroxide flakes combined with our usual sodium hydroxide 10 percent mix. Didn't work well. It would clog up our spray tips and was hard to rinse out of our diaphram pump. Hope you find a way to combine without the problems. Please post your results.

No Michael, I gave up elk hunting years ago when I moved to Colorado. Way, way too many people hunt in Colorado - it's like a war zone. Perhaps I'm spoiled - I lived in N Idaho where the hunting season lasted from the first week of Sept to sometime in Feb (back in the 60s). Hard to miss filling your tags back then - those days are gone forever. Sniff.

I sometimes will mix Potassium Hydroxide (liqued) , what we call "chinese" and Sodium Hydroxide (Powder) together. It makes a very hot chemical that we use on really thick, gooey grease or on baked on charbroiler grease. we don't use it much, but more as a last resort. The stuff burns the skin and lungs. I mix the sodium hydroxide powder until I can't dissolve any more powder , then add some potassium hydroxide. Do not mix the powder and liqued at the same time. Do not stand over the Sodium potassium and hydroxide as you mix it, mix it in a plstic bucket and use a wooden or plastic stirring stick. Do not use metal.

The grade that I have is Caustic Potash Crystals. I plan to use 25% Potash and my standard Hydrox. mix-we will see-will let all know. MSDs no real help.
 
Okay, I am soundly whipped, and was taken advantage of years ago. I will go crawl back into my truckwashing hole. I should have known that.

After reading Douglas' post I obtained liquid P/H from my chem supplier - at 45 percent liquid concentration. We had an especially hard job last night with lots of carbon and baked-on grease in a s/s broiler hood. Usually this would involve lots of elbow grease. We mixed heavy concentration s/h and then added a cup or two of the p/h. It raised temp nearly 100 degrees. It's amazing what this stuff will do. Didn't require any scraping - even dissolved all carbon and baked-on grease - resulted in very easy job.

I would like to know what this will do on Chinese. Please post your results.

I have been doing this mixture since I have read this post and it works alittle better, I would say it increase my chances a little higher of making the system perfect with less elbow grease.

My chemical supplier told me they call potasium hydroxide baby caustic. Its basically a weaker chemical than sodium hydroxide. He said if you mix the two you are just diluting the sodium hydroxide.

Maybe its the heat from mixing the chemicals together that makes it work a little better. Or possibly a change in the consistency, or thickness, of the chemicals.

Wheres a chemist when you need one?:confused:
 
The results were not good, we mixed with caustic-no change at all.
 
Was that one foam or two.

If I dunk a glob of grease in 35% liquid sodium hydroxide solution it does absolutely nothing. If I take that glob out and dunk it into my regular chem it dissolves in less than 5 minuets. Looks like I need to get some flakes and mix my own stronger batch.
