Ron, normally I wouldn't take too much interest something like this. This is different because almost a year ago I took keen interest in Phil and his family. It wasn't because of the show, it was because of his life outside the show.
Phil is an elder and a minister in the church of Christ. This is the church I was raised in since I was an infant.
From the beginning we were taught to study the word of God (this is a good thing).
By the time I was 5 years old I probably had over 150 bible verses memorized.
I was winning Bible Knowledge contests against high school seniors when I was 8 yrs old.
Was baptized at 7 (rare to be baptized that young in that church, but they questioned me and determined that I was ready)
Preached my first sermon in front of the entire congregation when I was 9. (About the evils of missing a church service........I was fully brainwashed at this point......lol.)
Attended and graduated from a private church of Christ High School.
Had a full baseball scholarship to one of the top church of Christ Universities in the nation.
And finally, in 1992-1993 I studied to be a church of Christ minister at one of their top "seminaries" (they call them preaching schools).
As a matter of fact, Shelly wasn't introduced to the church of Chris till she was in her mid 20's but she also attended one of their schools and went on mission trips to Russia and Romania for over two years with that church.
Shelly an I met at a church of Christ worship service.
So I have a very intimate knowledge of the church where Phil presides as and elder and serves as a minister.
Here are some things about this church that might make you think twice about this being anything more than just Phil stating his opinion.
1) The church believes men having long hair is a sin. (Looks like Phil isn't concerned about pleasing everyone)
2) The church believes any alcohol consumption is a sin AND transporting or selling alcohol is a sin (The Robertson family drinks wine and has a line of wines they sell)
3) The church believes euphemisms such as "darn" and "dang" are just sinful as any swear word. (There have been times they have said things on the show I know the coC wouldn't approve of.)
Yet, somehow, Phil has kept his own faith and still risen to be an elder in this church that has a history of different beliefs from him. Meanwhile he has stayed true to who he is and what he believes.
He is attacked by the church of Christ hall monitors (some of the very same men I went to seminary with and/or studied under). He is called every name in the book by them.
The Baptists cancelled a speaking engagement because the Robertsons own a vineyard.
The church of Chris cancelled speaking engagements because he was PLANNING on speaking to BAPTISTS!!!!!!!!
It's crazy, but Phil Robertson is a man who couldn't care less what others think about him.
He doesn't care what church of Christ hall monitors think about him. He doesn't care what A&E thinks about him. And he doesn't care what we think about him.
I don't believe there is a greedy bone in his body and I just can't fathom the idea that he would resort to trickery like this for ratings. It's just not the type of man he has proven himself to be over the years.
I know it's hard to believe. I've tried to explain this on these boards and at roundtables before and it just seems to be very difficult for people to understand. Sometimes people just do things because they believe in them. Not everything has to have a sinister motive. Not everything has to be about making more money. Sometimes people just want to spend their time on this earth doing what they think is right because they realize our time on earth is short.
That is the kind of man I believe Phil Robertson is.
