Past transportation just for fun

The first 3 are my early in life cars that I wish I still had. First car was a '72 Olds Cutlass convertible bought in in '82 when I turned 16 and threw newspapers and mowed grass to pay for it. During college, I drove an '86 Grand National while bartending and waiting tables (after 3 years of bliss, I totaled it with a bad accident). During grad school, I drove an '88 Nissan 300zx which I consider to the most fun car I ever drove--I put a quarter million miles on it. Should have never sold it but kids arrived and it only had 2 seats. After selling the 300zx, I drove a '95 Lexus GS300 for 10 years until upgrading to the '04 GS430 that i bought in 2005, which is my current car when I am not driving my 2001 Tahoe for work. I also drove an '85 Mazda RX-7 for a year during college until I wrapped it around a tree and went flying through the windshield (the mid to late 80's were a pretty wild time for me!). The 2001 Tahoe that I bought for my wife is the only vehicle that I ever bought brand new--and it's been a great work truck for the 4 1/2 years I have been in pressure washing.

Wow, you had all good stuff.

I had an older 280z I forgot about that I only had for a few weeks. It had a V8 American car engine in it and handled like crap. I always wanted one like yours.

From 1997-2006 we drove nothing but work vehicles.

1995 Ford E350 Van - It was a blue hair las vegas express van that brought in old people from nearby cities to gamble. It had 395k on it when I bought it and 465k when I sold it and was still running fine.

1998-2003 Chevy 1500 Vans - Had a bunch of these for dry clean delivery. They all got about 12 mpg delivering. One was all fixed up with a Regency kit and we doubled that one as our personal vehicle.

1996-2002 Dodge and Chrysler minivans- had a variety of these from the short ones to the long ones, from stripped down to loaded up and leather. They were a big mistake for commercial delivery. I was replacing brakes on them every 10k miles (that meant on some of them as often as every two months!!!! Things broke all time. Problems with radiators and fans. Just all kinds of things. Glad I don't have them anymore.

1990-1999 Suzuki Sidekicks and Geo Trackers - had a few of these for short routes. They were great. They were reliable and got about 18mpg. We also used these for our own personal four wheeling adventures and ended up letting Chris earn one that he ended up keeping till someone ran into him and destroyed it.

Here is one next to one of our crappy minivans:

This is one of our desert mountain runs. Shelly is pregnant with Fayth on this trip but didn't know it.

This is the one we gave Chris. We are lucky to still have it. The day this picture was taken we got stuck in the mountains after two deep (30+ft) gulleys and had to hire the guys in the second picture to get us out. They both got stuck too. It took both of them in tandem with the winches to get us out. It took them 8 hrs and they charged me a thousand bucks.

During those years we worked hard. We lived our work. We went a full 8 years without a real vacation. I only had one little hobby. I restored a 1983 Jaguar to perfection. It was fun. Unfortunately I don't have any before pictures because I never intended to do that much with it. It just became a hobby.

Throughout all this I still hadn't discovered the best car in the world. ........ Stay tuned, it's coming up later.

A Friend of mine bought a 442 cutlass convertible like that for $1100. His dad offered him $5k for it when he brought it home. It was garaged for years and was immaculate.

I remember racing a friend of mine with a '71 Cutlass 442 against my '72 Cutlass Supreme convertible. His 442 smoked me--it was ugly. A month later, I added headers/dual exhaust and a holley 4 barrel carburetor on my Rocket 350 engine. We raced again shortly after and it was a good race but his big block still ruled the night. I was shocked at how much faster my Cutlass was after the changes as my good friend put everything on it for me. I do miss that car!

After I made Shelly drive so many years with nothing but vans, When her business took off we got her what she wanted.

We had gone to a car dealership and she test drove a BMW 3 series. When she finished the test drive she was silent for a long time, then she said "Now I know why they call them the ultimate driving machine". Since BMW was one of her biggest customers and she wanted an SUV they gave her a good deal on a 2003 X5.

It was .....ok. It wasn't that great. It felt like it needed more get up and go. We had it for about three years and only used the 4wd on it once and that was playing in the snow on Mount Charleston.

Around the same time Sonitx was taking off too and after starting with vans pulling around enclosed trailers, then a bucket box truck we finally added an F450

PC090914.JPG

We got good deals from the BMW dealership and we liked them. I got this one paid the payments on this one for my salesman to drive around doing sales. I drove it some. It was not very fast on the low end, but it would do about 155 or 160 on the top. When he left he took over the payments on it. He still has it, I think.

PC090933.JPG

Once we started using power wash skids for Sonitx, I got rid of the enclosed trailers and started buying these from the auction. I think we have had about 5 F250's from 1993 to 1999's and a 1999 Extended cab Dodge 1500 POS It seemed weak and kept having problems. Chris and Jill drove it for a while and I finally got rid of it.

We still have three of the F250s and are probably going to buy one or two at the auction next month if they have anything decent. Usually we could buy these with less than 70k on them, but the county has started holding on to them longer these days before they auction them off.

I can't find a picture of the Dodge, but this is the first and oldest F250 we got from the auction.

79 Mustang GT It would have had a four cylinder turbo, but mine had a 302 by the time I bought it. It was loud because it sat low and the mufflers kept getting knocked off.

Wow, total flashback. My first car was a 79 stang but it had the 4spd 4 cyl turbo and hatchback, think it was 135hp. Went through oil like the Exxon Valdeez. I've had over 20 cars but here's a short list of favorites:

74 Datsun 260z
87 Mustang GT 5.0 5sp
92 Mazda MX-6
96 Suburban
04 Infiniti G35 coupe 6spd (Probably my favorite car I've owned. Everything I've owned has been worked and this was really worked from bolt-ons to computer, 0-60 in 4.5)

Dan, had a 95 MX-6 as a demo car from the car dealership I worked at when Shelly and I first started dating. That one really has some good memories!

G35! Nice!

Once we got that X5 paid off I couldn't wait to get rid of it. We got a real driving machine, a 2005 530i. I wanted a 550, but they only had one used one on the lot and it had too many miles on it for the extended warranty. The 530 came with a 100k bumper to bumper warranty and 3 years of free service. We went through about 6 $800 brake jobs before they started complaining about it and saying she was doing too much city driving.

This was my favorite looking car. It drove ok and I got it up to the limiter @ 155 a few times out in the desert. It was solid as a rock on the road. But it wasn't quiet and was not very big on interior room.

IMG_0042c.jpgIMG_0036-1.JPG

When the economy collapsed I got rid of it. I had had to pay a $3k deficit to the bank but I got out of around $700/mo in payments and $250 in insurance.

Then I went and paid cash for the best car on the planet.

Coming up next.

Don't laugh until you try it.

It's all Ron's fault for renting one on a cross country trip we did together. I would have never considered till I took that trip with Ron.

That is a beautiful Grand National!

I was a Senior in High School when those came out and I wanted one bad but just could not afford it working part time and going to school full time.

Forgot to mention I also had a couple of the Fiat X-19 cars and a Nissan Turbo 280ZX, those were cool cars but the Fiat always broke down all the time.

I hate to burst all your bubbles, but the car below is the best car on the planet. There's a reason the cab companies bought up all the last year run of them.

The Crown Victoria the Ron and I rented on our drive got me hooked. Plenty of power, feels great to drive, with a little modifications they handle great (need some meaty tires like these and upgraded suspension)

VERY inexpensive to buy for cash and repairs cost pennies. It's the most reliable car I have ever owned.

For two summers we have driven it from Seattle to New York to Tampa to San Diego, a total of about 17,000 miles just on two summer trips.

I like it so much I made a tribute video for it from our summer trip last year. Turn on your speakers and enjoy the ride.

My favorite car ever The Crown Victoria. May the Panther platform rest in peace.

Buddy had one in High School, I had a 68 Bronco. Neither Ever got Stuck

Dad had a late 60s bronco when I was around ten. First thing I can remember driving. It had big buck shot mudders and would go anywhere. Our deer lease at the time was mostly flooded river bottoms and I remember a guy in camp who had a jeep raising hell because he kept getting stuck in our ruts.
