painting a shingle roof

I got a call today from a potential customer - he said he was either going to have the roof cleaned or painted?

Has anyone ever heard of painting a shingle roof?

David, I have been painting professionally for 11 years. Never painted an asphalt roof, or will. I have never seen any one else paint it. I'd like to see the finish product it they do it. It cannot stay, even if it adhears at all. Thank You.

Seen a few here... Some don't look too bad and others don't look so good. Got called to clean a motel shingle roof a couple of years ago. Turns out whoever painted it didn't know how to paint very well. The results were good enough for the city. (yes they got a letter or would have never cleaned it). I wasn't happy withit at all. I thought it was just black with mold and algea until I started cleaning it and realized it had been painted over. Peobably never cleaned it before they painted it either. I won't say who I cleaned it for exept for this. "you clean for my roof? Awe, price too high! you give better deal". Take a look!

No David. It looked like they sprayed but heavier in some spots. Thats what I meant to say.....Spray swath strokes, stop and go lines! etc... LOL

Knowing the ...'s that own the motel I did they probably got a good deal on leftover concrete paint and used that... LOL

2 weeks ago I ran into the same thing with roof cleaning/painting situation, until then I have never heard of painting a shingle roof. I did a little research and found out Behr makes a paint specifically for shingle roofs but according to what I read it needs two coats for optimum coverage and it needs to be re coated every few years...sounds great for job security

Btw, you should inform him the roof needs to be cleaned before its painted so either way you get to at least wash the roof.

I talked to a painter that has done it, he said just to use a Latex paint.

Ha ha, answered my own question.

Here is a Brandon, FL roof cleaning we recently did with elastomeric roof coating.
This is a white roof coating, but you can get almost any color.
The shingles look horrible before putting this on.
Before I would use paint on a roof, you might consider this alternative ?
Elastomeric Roof Coating is available at Home Depot, etc.

There are a lot of people that use elastomeric roof coatings. It is basically applying a rubber coating to the roof, and they do it to incresae life, (or to avoid redoing the roof) It is not unheard of in Arizona to do it, but it is usally sprayed on and it always looks tacky.
