On the job training in exchange for free help?

Hello all, my name is Phil Rogers and I am the owner of Extreme Cleaning Solutions in Maryland. I currently work full time in the IT field, and I'm having a hard to getting my business to the point of being strong enough to stand on it's own without guaranteed income (this is starting my 2nd year, part time). I would like to add Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning to my list of services so I can work during the day and after hours, but I want to learn the right way to cleaning kitchen exhaust systems.

Anyone up for helping me learn "on the job" in exchange for free help?

Thanks in advance.

Before you get into kitchen exhaust cleaning you might want to be aware that the insurance for KEC work is specific and very expensive. The liability you are taking will not be covered by any general liability policy.

My advice, don't add a bunch of stuff you know nothing about to grow your business. Put the effort and $$ into your area of specialty. There are millions of roofs out there, compared to thousands of hoods.

KEC is very cutthroat if you do not know your cost and time it takes to do the job.
You will work for free or lose money. Your customer will leav you for less than $50.
Even though you do a better job.

That's why I want to learn. I understand exactly what you're saying, but my goal when starting this business wasn't just to clean roofs and houses. Now that my business is growing more, I have more money and opportunity to learn something new, to grow.

Thanks for your input, and to show I understand, I've chosen not to pursue deck/fence cleaning/sealing due to lack of interest and time considering it would hinder my other services that I offer. It would also take a somewhat large investment to properly license and train myself to learn to clean and treat wood properly. I am extremely interested in hood cleaning, and it wouldn't hinder my other services at all, so it's an investment that is 100% worth it to me.

Your an IT guy, why do you want to play in stinky grease all night. I understand wanting regular scheduled work being that you are in MD but man KEC isnt like any other pressure washing.
I would work to grow resi or commercial or both

But thats just me, I have always hated grease since I was a busboy/dishwasher in greasy kitchens from age 11. I can't stand the smell LOL

Either way, good luck

Thanks, Jeff. I'm an IT guy, but I can't stand this field, sitting on my arse all day. I'm working hard to take my business full time next year, so I'd like to be as well armed as possible.

I lack the equipment and space for proper environmental reclaim, so it would be unethical of me to start cleaning the exterior of businesses without being able to reclaim the water. I did read something the other day that as long as the water evaporates before entering the storm drain, that is efficient, but I'm not quite sure if that is up to date or not.

What makes you think Grease guys dont reclaim. Greasers actual capture most of there waste. Now they use gravity and Plastic and it ads up.

They how ever do interior cleanings they should have equipment for and most just Dont.

Good luck with your changes, search Schools here for more info.

Hey Ron, I did figure that they had to reclaim, but I hoped the equipment requirements would be different and this is one of the reasons I was hoping to shadow/help someone for a few days.

Thanks! While I am looking to expand, I want to be compliant and I want to do things properly, not half-assed.

There are a lot of super big-time greasers coming to the New Orleans Event. NOLA would be nothing without the Grease Kings.
PM me for more info.

Phil, Thad makes a good point. Come hang with us in New Orleans and see what its all about. Then decide. This is a must attend event if you are interested in grease. The free flowing of information is directly related to free flowing on C2H5OH. So bring plenty of $$. I think there is some kind of algorithm or formula for this.

Hey guys, I am going to see if my wife wants to take a trip, that looks like a great event. I'd like to meet some of the guys that I chat with on a daily basis on these boards.

Thanks for letting me know about the NOLA event.

You will be able to meet a 48 million dollar greaser, bring lots of cash he does most of his talking at the hustler.
