All variables constant, switching 15 deg to 25 deg nozzles reduces impact by almost?

There it is, the formula for Impact.

Tom you got it.

I = K x GPM x square root of psi,

where K is a constant

this is why flow is KING.

(Flow could also be a pain in the ....... when you have to reclaim)

Something to think about: :scratchhead:

If you have the famous single piston 13HP engine that usually comes setup with a 4 gpm @ 3500 psi pump. (14000 cleaning units)

Impact would be K x 4 x 3500^(0.5) = 236.64K

If you setup that same engine with a pump at 5.6 gpm @ 2500 psi (14000 cleaning units)

Impact would be K x 5.6 x 2500^(0.5) = 280K

and with the extra flow of a 5.6 gpm pump it would be better for rinsing up to 40% faster.

Great info Nigel, Thanks.

How long does your 15 deg and 25 deg, nozzles last pushing 8 to 10 gpm at 3500 to 3000 psi @ 200F?

I use almost always use 25 deg, for curbs, and gum removal.
I found that the ones I am using last about 15 to 20 hours before the pattern is distorted, there is no name stamped on them, but they look like copies of general pumps. They came with my machine, not sure if they are hardened stainless steel.

I use both the General and Spraying Systems nozzles in the surface cleaners.

I am not sure if there really is a difference in how it cleans based on their designs

Chris, I was referring to the single nozzle on a lance, I think the surface cleaner nozzles last even a shorter time because of all the debris and possible banging.

I did not notice my spray pattern was distorted the other night until I just found that gum was taking a longer time than usual to remove, so I up the heat, I had some improvement, but when I changed the nozzle, wow, what a difference. I then examined the openings of the two nozzles, it was noticeably bigger, spray was more concentrated in the centre on the worn nozzle with less water at the edges.

So I ask

Typically how long does the sharper angle nozzles 15 and 25 deg last for you guys and what is your pump flow and pressure?

I am not in the situation where I would know the hours due to my work but if I had to guess, I would guess less than 60 hours each nozzle with 5.6gpm.

I also did the same thing a while back, changed out a nozzle and it cleaned the gum better.

I was thinking about giving those ceramic nozzles a try, if they last a lot longer than a few of the regular nozzles it would be a good investment.

Seems I may have be fooled, they look like Generals but the nozzles I have been running are not, I wonder who makes the copy cats.

If it is not printed General it only a "sergeant"....

Thats for you Chris, hahahahaha!!

There are several vendors out there selling imitation General Pump Spray Nozzles, you have to look at the print and probably even ask them to keep them honest.

Most vendors do sell both General and Spraying System nozzles but usually the more popular sizes but some will special order the other sizes.

The funny thing is I got a bunch of "Sergeant" nozzles form my machine builder, makes me wonder if they are even hardened SS.

15 hrs I found was to short.

Lasting that amout of time, I would call them "Private" nozzles. hahahahaha

I would not order from them again unless they are very, very inexpensive but in the long run it might cost you more time and aggravation using the cheaper nozzles.

So the answer is 12. Did I win anything? :scratchhead:

I throw them out after a few heavy nights of work.

Remember that the impact measurements was at 12" from nozzle,

I am uncertain if the relationship between “distance from nozzle tip vs nozzle impact” is linear or exponential, thus the chart I listed could be somewhat meaningless in a surface cleaner if its exponential; because the distance form nozzle to cleaning surface is small (1 to 1.5 inches) in a surface cleaner, the impact differece may not be as significant as the percentages shown, but from experience it is less from 15 to 25 deg nozzles.

But the chart would hold true for use of nozzle in a wand at 12"
